Hey guys, i have a friend who wants to sell his 95 spyder sl, the car is in great working condition. It currently is a na 4sp auto, but im wondering if it would be worth getting this car and transplanting the drivetrain from a 98 vr4 parts car that i can also get.
The drive train off the donor car is in perfect condition, completely stock with less than 70k miles on it. Ive done several awd tt to fwd conversions one 3000gt and two on diamantes. Ive looked at the threads by other people as well as bob the greats website. As far as the work im not worried about running into any problems. Im just trying to figure out if it would be worth the time to do this conversion and then try and sell the car? I have a ton of time on my hands for the next couple months, and am thinking that this might be an fun way to do something different and possibly make some money in the process. What do you guys think? Do you think i could make enough money in the process to justify the time and initial investment? (he is looking to get 10k for the spyder, might be able to get that price to come down a bit) at the end of everything id have a hybrid 95/98 sl/vr4 spyder and the sl's engine, tranny, ecu, and tcu which i could sell... |

That would be a lot of work, but I am sure it could be done. There is a guy on another forum I spend a lot of time on. He is converting a FWD chasis to an AWD chasis. From what I have seen, there are several differences. If you don't mind stripping down both cars, and doing a lot of cutting and welding to bring things from the AWD casis to the FWD then go for it. But it isn't a project for just anybody. The guy on the other forum is doing a complete chasis conversion, I hear you can get an AWD into an FWD with less done, but the geometry of certain parts is different than what it was designed to be when doing it without a true conversion. So if you have time on your hands, welding skills, organization, and a willingness to see the project to the end, I say do it. The world could use another VR4 Spyder. Not enough of them were made.

Ya, ive also spoken to Joel (bob the great) about fabrication of the frame mount s for the rear sub frame...
From what ive seen the market value for a 95 vr4 spyder is about 20k, kbb for a 95 vr4 spyder is about 19.5k... Im thinking if i could get 17 or 18k for the hybrid it would be worth it for me to go through the build.... |

It is more than just a few mounts that need to be welded in. The whole tub where the strut mounts to in the back is different between the FWD and the AWD cars. Also the mounting for the drive shaft is missing some stuff on the FWD cars. I'm gonna pm you a link with a lot of pictures and info about the swap.

Why mess up a good car? Keep the spyder and fix the VR4 and have two. In a few years our cars will be like the muscle cars are now. You need to keep a "Numbers matching car" together. |
