I just drained out the pennzoil synchromesh and whatever I had in the t-case(redline stuff Shockproof I believe). The tranny still had quite a bit of stuff on the magnetic plug and I noticed some brass/copper/gold flakes in the drain pan. I then filled up the tranny/tcase with some Royal Purple stuff.
As far as what I did... I ran straight MaxGear for the t-case and I did a 2 qt synchromax/.5 quart Max Gear mix for the tranny(not exact, I know it's only 2.4qt) I'm going to try the royal purple stuff out to see if I get better mileage out of these fluids before trying the Mobil1 10w30 stuff. I kinda feel better using spec'd oils and the royal purple name doesn't hurt either. So the Mobil 1 thing may have to hold off if the Royal Purple is solid stuff.

I will also second what brett said about not using pennzoil synchromesh for more than 3000 miles. It seemed to work fine for a few thousand miles... but a notchy gearbox definitely showed itself fairly early. That stuff definitely didn't offer protection over an extended period of time...

I am getting ready to replace the gear oil in my rear axle, transfer case, and transaxle. I dont want to do this very often. Someone posted something about changing every 3000 miles. I am thinking more like 50,000. what should I use?

Same here! If you live in a cold climate, then your transmission will hate you until the RP gets up to operating temps. I had synchromesh before and hated it...RP cleared up a lot of notchiness. Look in my sign, this is what I run in my car and it peforms VERY well!

No complaints about Royal Purple. I run it in the M3, noticeably smoother than the BMW fluids.
-- Figure it's worth adding in; also, if my memory serves me correctly the Royal Purple meets the GL rating requirements the 3/S manual recommends.

So is Max-Gear or SynchroMax the right stuff to use? I currently have 600 miles on some Pennzoil and am already planning on changing it out, I'm not a fan. However, when I read the data on Max-Gear it says GL-5 which I thought was bad for 3S synchros. If you are all using it without problems though, then I'll go with it. Let me know, thanks.
