Default Questions for replacement of O/S seal

If you could help me with a list of things other than the seal and fluid to get the job done.

Will I be able to get the VCU out of the case with the tranny still in the car? Most of what I could find was just the shaft replacement. No clear cut answer on getting the actual VCU out with out having to remove the tranny. Thanks! This will be the second time I have to replace this seal. All I can say is thanks kormex. I might have a bad bell housing.

Default Re: Questions for replacement of O/S seal

People here claim that on an 18 spline output shaft you can get that seal out--transmission still in the car and everything. I have never messed with an 18 spline transmission before.

On my '92 with the 25 spline, the transmission *MUST* be disassembled to replace that seal. It sounds like the stupidest thing in the world, and it is. But it is the only possible way to do it. The seal gets installed from the inside of the transmission. The lip in the transmission case which the seal gets pushed against during installation is on the OUTSIDE, which means it has to be installed from the inside. There was no way to remove and re-install a seal from the outside without damaging something.

Some also say that a generic seal will work fine. Maybe it will, but I've never tried it before. Many seals--typically those with high-speed components spinning inside of them are designed with the direction of rotation in mind. I went with the $4x.xx seal from Mitusbishi and its working fine so far.

Gotta love these problematic transmissions. Right now I am thinking of the Volkswagen commercials where they boast about their German engineering..... ha ha.
