The thing about this procedure is that if you forget something, there is a good chance you will mess something up. In three hours the tranny can be on the floor and it would be a lot easier to disassemble. Even on this thread I am still seeing people run into problems and broken parts and it has guide lines. This proceedure is only easy if you do not make any seemingly simple mistakes. Be very careful guys.

Which bearing did you break and how did you break it? Tap the pins in as far as you can. You should be able to just pry the gear out of the way and if need be, have a friend give the OS a _light_ tap with a rubber mallet.

Anyone have the second link (write up) saved? The link is no good anymore and I really need it. I read it a while back and now I am in the process of doing this.

One question, the 12mm hex bolt....it comes out before the cover is off? It appears that the cover would have to come off first and I don't want to crack the casing.

It needs to come off first.

Cool thanks for the reply.

I did get the 12mm off, but I don't see a 7mm anywhere which could explain why I cannot get the shaft to pop out from the case. I have it split about 1/2" all around, and I put a bolt in the hole where the 12mm was and pounded the crap out of it...no luck.

Any ideas? I'm calling it quits for today, this has taken way too long to do.

You will have either a 12 mm hex bolt or a 7 mm hex bolt but not both. Make sure you remove the detent cover that holds the balls and springs for the forks. How long have you spent on this proceedure so far?

Well, working very casually (my Stealth has been sitting dead for a couple years), I would say about 6 hours. I got the 12mm out (good to know it is one or the other) and the detent cover/springs/balls are out. The case is open about 1/2" but no matter how hard I pound where the 12mm bolt was, that shaft will not pop out. I know that aluminum is soft so I can't go crazy on it.

I pulled the tranny once before when I did the clutch, and I would honestly rather die than pull the tranny again. I am just trying to fix this to sell it (unfortunate, but I just cannot afford to maintain this car and it deserves someone who can really appreciate it).

I remember that other walkthrough being REALLY good, but unfortunately the site is no longer there.

My main concern about hitting that shaft is breaking the cover because unlike my other vehicles...it's not a simple trip to Pick N Pull to replace, I don't even know if I could buy just that piece anywhere considering how these trannies are so....well....unique for lack of a better word.

Thanks for responding.

P.S. Just to double check...I put some spacers all around the case, then put a bolt in where the 12mm bolt was and pound the crap out of it right?

this is mikes2nd dad and he has had good luck getting the case off by using a 3 leg 12 inch puller to get the case off the output shaft, it sets a little crooked but works with a little effort
