Will adjusting my shifter cable that goes forward/back make my shifter tighter? Or will this take the cable linkage out of rig? I have about 5-6" of freeplay forward and back, but left and right is pretty solid.

Also check the bushings to make sure they're not going bad. Both on the linkage by the trans and under the plate by the shifter itself. I had a bolt pop out of the shifter braket on the trans before which caused a lot of freeplay. It sounds stupid, but it happened.
