hey man i've had my rebuilt kormex for about 5 months now and it wasn't what i expected either. it's not as bad as you say with the clunk going into second. but when i try to speed shift into third it's not like super instant which kind of bothers me. i know kormex recommends 10w 30 motor oil... yes i will repeat myself, 10w 30 motor oil and i'm using mobil 1 which i have ran for about 8k miles now and the tranny has pretty much stayed the same. i think i'm going to swap some redline in there and see how that treats me. and bret brinkmann where were you when i had these questions!?!!
but this is a great thread and i am going to try that dragging clutch test right after school and maybe mess with the linkage this weekend. good luck with your tranny driver17 and if i find out anything i will be sure to let you know ![]() |

I was probably learning about entholpy and other thermodynamic related stuff. School is pretty demanding of my time these days. I really should be working on my project right now, but I do not want to burn out. Plus.... I miss you guys.
![]() I have tried many different kinds of fluids and it has been my experience that these trannys like fluid on the thin side. Red Line MTL is a good choice. 10W30 engine oil either Mobil 1, Havoline, conventional, synthetic, what ever, has not worked as well for me. It seems to break down sooner than fluid that is designed for a gear box so mind you fluid change intervals. That long nut you descibed with the two little ones on either side is the turn buckle I speak of. Play around with the left one's adjust and see if it gets any better. Just remember that if it doesn't shift right when you go through the gears slowly, it DEFFINATELY will shift worse if try to shift faster. That will actually mess some thing up and you may very well forfit any chance you have at making a warrenty claim with Kormex. Play with the adjustment, check the stuff I mentioned earlier on the tranny, and if it isn't getting slowly better driving it around normally (and when I say "normally" I mean "slowly"), then give the guys at Kormex a call and see what they can do for you.

i messed around with that nut a for about an hour last night and today a little bit and there is a noticable difference. but i did try a speed shift into third one more time and it is still giving me fits.
would you recommend straight redline mtl or a 50/50 of that and the other stuff they offer? |

I tried the 50/50 mix. Go straight MTL. You won't regret it. Other members seem to have good luck with BG synchroshift. It is more costly though. I plan on trying it next.
Stop speed shifting until you get this issue resolved. One of the biggest failures I see in the 3/4 rings for both 5 and 6 speeds, is people using sub-par fluid and trying to speed shift anyway. Especially when the fluid is still cold. It's just not a good idea. |

oh i always let my tranny warm up before i'm agressive on it.
and i baby it a lot too.. like i've done maybe 5 speed shifts into 3rd in the past 2 months just because i don't have a reason to. k i'm gonna try the straight mtl in that case. also i can feel my shifter vibrate when i'm in third or 4th and i put my hand on it. so will getting solid bushings make that better? anyhoo thank you sooooooooo much bret you are one super kick ass guy +rep for you ![]() |

Solid bushings won't help with a shifter vibration. And adjustment could though. Some thing may be hitting the shift shaft on the tranny when it is in 3rd. I still recommend solid bushings for more precise shifting though. It makes it easier to adjust the cables also.

so do you man the bushings for the linkage over the tranny, or the bushings by the shifter.
and yeah i checked out that write up colt 45 did and i think i'll give that a shot sometime soon but anyways i've been messing around with that nut thing (the name escapes me) a lot. like at least 2.5 hours worth, and i can't seem to find a sweet spot. is there a way to do this and know when it's perfect or should i just wait till i think it feels good and leave it at that? thanks again bret ![]() |

Have you tried talking to the person who installed it? I can't say enough good things about Frank, I rebuilt my tranny right before I drove the car to LA (1200 miles) and had what must have been a defective set of synchros, I couldn't shift to 3rd or 4th without grinding and so I babied it to LA and took the car to Frank personally who did everything he could to make it right including have his brothers shop drop the tranny so he could replace the synchros and the gears that got damaged for an EXTREMELY reasonable rate. I'm pretty sure he lost money on the deal, but I have no problem recommending people to him as a result.
I doubt the problem is his tranny, more likely the install but be civil and Frank will take care of you if the problem is on his end.

good read. interesting to see your guys experiences with Kormex transmissions. my red TT has 99k miles and shifts like butter. my other two can get notchy at times, but that can be minimized with different fluids. Syncromesh seems to work, but doesnt react well with really cold weather.
