Default Judging Trans Damage in a Non Running Car?

im going to look at a 92 vr4 for sale. its currently not running and the owner bought it that way so he doesn't know anything about the transmission. is there anything i can do to determine if it has any kind of problems without driving it. also how much does it usually cost if it grings in 1st and 2nd like a typical problem like that? also anything to check with the transfer case, besides an obvious leak? thanks

About the best you can do is make sure it goes into all gears, no obvious external damage, and the clutch pedal feels ok. Probably run you anywhere from $1500+ to replace the synchros if you have a shop do it.
