Here is a link to my recent thread, you can check out the responses I received: Rebuilding trans-Input on 3rd gear? Pics inside
As I said, my 3rd looked nearly the same as yours. I would at least pick up a good used 3rd gear to replace that one.

Yes, those flat spots both on the gear dogs and on the slider will cause a problem. Replace both.

As for the friction ring. What do the ball detent pads look like? That is the place that really wears and causes the ring to not travel foward and stop the gear in time.

How the heck did I miss this thread???? . . . Many of my questions would have been answered here.

Oh, , I did notice some marks on the backs of the rings . . . now this is starting to make sense, how these things work. (I think) . . .
I will go take some pictures of that.

Thanks guys!

Here are what my detent pads look like. Again, 3rd gear (top) is clearly in worse shape than 4th.

It is interesting, I took these pictures to show the detent pad, but the second picture clearly shows wear on the teeth of friction ring, as mentioned in mynamiseli's thread.

I thought I would mention again, these are steel rings, even though the color is more like brass/bronze.
