Default How do these 5-speed synchros look?

Attached is photo of my #3 synchro. (#2 is similar) My tranny will grind when shifted into 3rd gear under high RPM, so thought I would pull the tranny apart to see if I could fix it.

I see two possible problems with the 3rd gear syncro shown in Synchro3.jpg.

1) from the color, it appears to be brass, which I thought meant it is a cheap, non-OEM replacement.
2) there is no gap between the ring and the gear, which seems to imply that it is worn out. I have seen other pictures of new one, and appears to have a gap.

According to previous owner, he had the tranny rebuilt, but I had problems with 3rd, right after I bought it.

How do this look? Time for replacement?

That syncro doesn't look very good... But the real problem I see, is the gear is wiped out.. And I'm going to assume the slider looks the same.

Does that mean the gear needs to be replaced? How can you tell from the picture, what are we looking for?

oh, yeah . . . looked closer . . . the points on those teeth do not look as sharp as the ones on 4th gear.

Thanks.

can't see the synchro in that pick (for wear) , just the gear dogs and they are trashed. You will need a new gear. And most likely if the gear dogs are that trashed you will also need synchros.

Yeah, I need to press things apart tonight, to get a better look. . . . I was not sure if it was possible to tell by the lack of gap, that it was definitely worn out.

Hopefully I will be posting new pictures tonight. Thanks for helping identify what I need. . . . this is sounding expensive.

Yes you can... The fact that the syncro is against the gear face tells you the friction surface is nonexistent...

Wow. That is about the best picture anyone has ever shown me of their dog teeth up close. The dog teeth on the gear and synchro sleeve should deffinately be replaced. The rings also look like they are the old soft brass style. The softer brass body of the ring will delevope indintations on the tangs that contact the synchro detents which will result in excessive clearance and grinding even if the friction material is still good. That is why I always recommend replacing them with the much more durable new style of the steel bodied rings. Both 3rd and 4th rings look like they are brass bodied. Do yourself a favor in the long run and replace them now.

I do believe we have a used 3rd gear and 3/4 hub and sleeve assembly at 3SX, but don't quote me on that just yet. Give me a call their on Monday and I'll double check to make sure. 704-784-DRAG I do know that we have the rings brand new at the least. We may have a set of very good used ones (steel bodied obviously) to sell as well.

I am in the process of rebuilding mine right now. My 3rd gear looked identical to yours, and my slider was toast as well. Once you get the assembly pressed off post up some more pictures. Don't hesitate to give 3sx a call.. they were very helpful in getting me the parts I needed.

As it turns out, I do have the STEEL synchros with sintered friction inner. Should have thought this before, but a magnet sticks to the outside. The outside has taken on a bronze color, but is definately steel.

Attached is photo of the 3rd and 4th synchro. 3rd is on top. Obviously it is more worn out.

Attached are photos, first comparing of the dog teeth on 3rd and 4th gear, then a photo of slider comparing the 3rd and 4th side . . . . 3rd is the upper view in each.

I assume that both should look more like 4th.

Do you really think that 3rd should be replaced?
