Like the title states I have a freind with a 91 VR4 that has no 5th or reverse.
The shifter goes into place but there is nothing there. This issue developed after the tranny was removed for an engine swap.

A person who makes unnecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice") to make it (mostly make it look) faster. The most common modifications are (but not limited to): - Huge exhaust that serves no purpose but to make the car louder - Large spoiler on the back that looks like something Boeing made for the 747 - Lots of after-market company stickers they don't have parts from, but must be cool - Expensive rims that usually cost more than the car itself - Body kit to make the car appear lower, usually accented with chicken wire - Clear tail lights and corner signals - A "performance intake"- a tube that feeds cold air to their engine usually located in areas of excessive heat (behind or on top of the engine) - Most of these riced cars (a.k.a. rice rockets or rice burners) are imports; Honda Civics, Accords, Integras, CRXs, RSXs, Del Sols Mitsubishi Eclipses, Lancers, Subaru Imprezas, however there are some domestics such as Chevrolet Caviliers, Dodge Neons, Ford Focus; small, slow, economy cars designed specifically to go slow. Please note that some 3000gt's Supras, Skylines, WRX's and other higher performance imports are designed to go fast, and are therefore not always considered rice, but it really depends on the severity of the case. Thanks Jack, I was hoping you would drop in.
I was also thinking that it would be a shift fork issue. FYI the car drives and shifts just fine in 1st through 4th, and the engine swap included the tranny, so it was actually an unknown and the donor car had taken a front end hit. Is this a servicable issue? How deep into it would I have to go to replace the rail and fork assembly? From the details in the manual it would appear that the bell housing and center case would need to be removed to gain access. If that is the case, would it be safe to open it up replace/fix the broken rail/fork and put it back together? |

haven't ever looked at the end of a AWD trans but the FWD the 5th gear fork is in its own 7 bolt cover on the end of the transmission so to service it you just go into the passenger side wheel well and take off the cover and go at it. something tells me its not that easy with the AWD transmissions. I don't think i remember seeing a 5th gear service cover on it

I would not recommend trying to pull the shift forks out of a 5 spd AWD tranny with it on the car. You would have to take the input shaft and intermediate shaft out with the shift forks. They may come out but it would be hell getting everything lined up again for the reinstall. In theory, you can disassemble the whole transmission and leave the bell housing attached to the engine. I don't know of anyone that has done that but I think it would be more trouble than it is worth.

I think the fork is fine, you just have a pin that backed out. I would just remove the trans end-cover with the unit in the car and take a look. If the pin is backed out I would just pull the pin and replace it with the fork in place and pop the cover back on.
Note the cover is tricky as the input shaft is pressed to it. so removing and installing it can be difficult. Jack |

Thanks again. I think it just might be worth the time to try it. Worse case is that I have to pull the whole tranny. |
