Jeff, you are not too sure about which comment? I'd like to see an all steel syncro in person compared to a stocker (even if worn). Any chance you have one at the shop? There could be other options than sintered bronze friction material (like the oem inner). We bond resin-coated cellulose friction material on syncros that work very well in some applications. I wonder if there is enough clearance to bond friction material onto the new steel parts, or if we could mill them down to create the clearance (just thinking out loud).
Don't quote me on this, as I haven't investigated (far down on the priority list), but working for a company that makes syncros, as well as outsources small batches to prototype shops on a regular basis might help get some ideas rolling. $40k for tooling for what? Dies for stamping? That would be crazy for small batches. Maybe we could chat sometime if/when I drop my tranny off. You work with Jeremy just down the road in Troy right (I'm in A. Hills)? I could drop my trans off after work (or at lunch) someday and we could talk about syncros ![]() Wayne Quote:

Spoke to Bill Lane at Autocroft today. He said they will be no longer selling Getrag parts in about a month. He said they did it more or less as a favor and that we should hurry if we want any parts.
Also spoke with Travis at Mark Williams enterprises to confirm that they do NOT sell the Transfer case input spool as of right now.

If Autocraft is getting out of it, I wonder if someone here could get their supplier list so that we could do periodic group buy orders to get at least some of the common tranny parts that wear/break?
Sounds like the Japan connection via Mentor is the best bet if that's still alive.

He may be a nice guy working for a great company but they have handled this parts thing like kids. Here's an Idea for them : Give the Getrag parts biz to someone like Jeff (gatecrasher) put all the inventory in a database and have a webpage with all the parts and prices spelled out . He can get merchant services, paypal . Who cares if Jeff charges more for parts , at least he would answer his phone when we all call. I would pay more for a steady source . I'll give you an example: I was buying input bearings for more then $100.00 (someone had these made in China) while CRS was selling the OEM for $45.00 . My Opinion on CRS : They are fucking childish |

As per my experience the aftermarket bronze Synchros are not good for 3-4 on the 5spds . we tried and tested them when they where first made and they just couldn't hold as well as the OEM , we do use them for the 5th and Reverse where they are acceptable. BTW we supply the 1/2 blocking rings for those kits. Last edited by KORMEX : 05-17-2006 at 09:53 AM. |

I could buy some parts from mentor mitsu, but it may take 3-4 months for them to arrive. Good idea to buy in bulk and start a site.
Edit: What parts are you guys interested in, only 3-4 synchros for the 6 spds vr4's? I believe they are a 3 ring system like 1st and 2nd, so are you guys looking for all of the rings? Last edited by ubnpast : 05-17-2006 at 10:13 AM. |

Mentor isn't dealing with this any more. Our contact there is long gone. I'm trying to see what I can do with a good local Mitsu dealer I work with, but the issues there are delivery cost and the time involved. For instance, they want over $150 for a 1st gear syncro assembly, and it is only sold as the complete 3 piece kit. There's no way to get just friction rings. Fortunately I've managed to locate compatible 1-2 friction rings and outer from another trans, but that's all I've been able to find so far
I've got a small pile of very expensive and very useless friction rings sitting on my bench right now.Wayne, I'll be in touch. I've still got a couple of those metal rings sitting around. I'm going to ask Bill if he'll give me his contact info for the Getrag people. Even if he does, I think it's a long shot that they'll talk to me, but it couldn't hurt to try. |

i recently ordered a full set of new 5 spd synchros from Autocraft aka CRS. just a word of warning if it hasn't been mentioned already...they're significantly more expensive than the prices listed in 3si's FAQ. i have a breakdown if anyone is interested.. and they did confirm that once their stock is gone, there will be no more through them
![]() i also ordered parts from Kormex...what can i say? these guys know how to run a business ![]() thanks to everyone for their hard work on this.. subscribing. |
