some torque specs
1991 18 spline center vcu 120k constant rotational torque was 60 in/lbs (rotation speed was speed that was smooth in rotation, i could have gone faster but it wouldnt have been constant rotation speed) it was possible to rotate by hand but a little difficult fastest rotation possible for 180 degrees of rotation was 95 in/lbs (moved it as fast as i could for 180 sweep) impossible rotate faster by hand cuz i couldnt get it to rotate any faster than constant. just too hard! 1996 6-spd center vcu 80k constant was 20 in/lbs fast was 27 in/lbs obviously was bad 2nd gen vcu from Bret unknown mileage constant was 50 ft/lbs fast was like 70 ft/lbs or higher hurt myself doing it as fast as i could a few times keep in mind the first two vcus were measured in in/lbs and the last one was in ft/lbs so there is a big difference. the 2nd gen from Bret i couldnt turn by hand to say. i had to put the front pinion in a vice and then slide the vcu onto and then give it a hell of a force to get it to spin a little. obviously leverage from the torque wrench made it easier to turn after that. dave lets do it at the meet this weekend or afterwards were ever we end up drinking! but if we do it at the meet we can throw it on the grill when were done hahaha ![]()

Wow, thanks for the torque specs! That makes me wonder, though... do you think the 1st gen VCUs were of a different variety than the 2nd gens? Mine is from a 1992 25 spline. If yours or Dave's is of a different variety, it might be good to compare.
And could somebody help me with my ECU thread!? ![]() - Dmitry |

well me and Bret hypothizied that the reason 2nd gen center diff cases with the holes them are angled in an attempt to help cool the vcu. he thought this was casue rollouts on first gens between the front and rear are good till the 11th digit or something like that. were the 2nd gen is only good to the 3rd so the vcu was naturally gonna work more and needed more cooling so they slotted the holes on them were first gen are just straight holes.
also with all the first gens ive taken apart the vcu has circular holes in them for the planetary to connect to them with were others have said they have the oval holes in them. the first time i saw the oval was on the vcu Bret sent me. but now who knows what u'll find when u open one. so maybe there was a difference. someone needs to go to bill at crs and see if they can get some torque specs on all the different types he has. they may however all superseed to the newere style. even 18 spline vcu are coming with the oval holes now so... ps weres the ecu thread? i have a jap ecu to throw into the mix besides my usdm one ![]() |

Mitsubishi, Toyota, BMW, and GM products. I have seen some Getrag parts in various Saturns, Saabs, and Chevrolets from rebuilding them in the past. Check into all of those manufacturers weather the tranny is listed as a Getrag unit or not. One of the "Saab" units (also found in the Saturn Ion) has synchros that are identicle in style to ones found in a "Getrag" unit only they are a different diameter. I still have a 1/2 synchro assembly out of a GEtrag unit that was pulled out of an Ion. Who ever looks into this give Jeff Watson at Champion Toyota in Texas a call. 800-327-2087.

Has anyone had success getting 6-speed transfercase internals from Japan or anywhere? I've broken yet another set of tcase gears, so if anyone has a lead on where I could acquire internals I'd be grateful!
