MilkyClr69 - Doc is correct about the 1/2 synchro rings. It should also be noted that the 3/4 synchro rings are the same and thus you would need one for each gear. You do not need to replace the drain and fill plugs unless they are damaged. The input shaft a bearing on the bellhousing side that has a seal incorperated into it and an o-ring also. They are sold as a unit, B02. Inspect your dog teeth on the gears and synchro collars also. If any are questionable you can always send me a pic and I'll give you my opinion. If they are obviously damaged then replace the collar (for some collars you will have to get the whole synchro assembly, collar, hub, and detent springs and balls) and the gear.
DocEBrown - I updated the first post again. This time I included a link to the rebuild manuals Gatecrashers posted and to the "Everything you need to know about your AWD drivetrain" thread. I have not added a list of all the synchro rings and seals because it may not be nessisary to replace them all during a rebuild and other componants may be needed that would obviously not be on that list. For this reason I always welcome any questions, weather through posts, threads, PMs, e-mails, or phone calls from fellow members. I'd rather they ask another memeber who knows or me personally rather than risk them being confused and ordering the wrong parts.

So if i effectively wanted to replace all the synchronizers... i would want:
2 of c45 (1st/2nd set of three rings) 2 of c11 (3rd/4th set of three rings) 1 of c63 (5th synchro ring) 1 of c74 (reverse synchro ring) plus whatever seals and gaskets i needed... this is assuming nothing else is wrong... Thats what i gathered from your reply, is that correct?

DocEBrown - You can get a better price than $250 for just the roller bearings through applied or AutoCraft. Autocraft will sell you just about every roller bearing (minus a few which you can get through Applied) plus the needle bearings, plus B02 for a little over $300 last I checked. If you just want the roller bearings (only need to be replaced if they are damaged) then AutoCraft/CRS and applied should be able to give you a lower price. If you are uncertain if some of the reference numbers include the outer race Bill should be able to tell you if they do and if not then help you get the reference number for the outer race for you. You are welcome to ask me for help also.
MilkyClr69 - You are correct about the synchro rings for the 5 speeds. AutoCraft/CRS had them all in stock last I checked. If you need any help with the seal reference numbers just let me know. |

Ok here is the official work from Autocraft (CRS) as to what is in stock for the 6 speeds:
ALL BEARINGS (tapers and needles...and I do mean every one of them) ALL SEALS (B06(x2), B07(x2), B31, B66) comes to a COD total before shipping of $529. This is for the 446 ONLY. I'm sure the 440 will be less, but not by very much. Here is the best way to get a hold of Bill at Autocraft: Either by phone in the AM hours (8-10am CST) or via fax (405-577-5388). If you know you need a part just fax in the request with your address and the COD method of payment to Bill's attention. It is much faster to do it that way then play phone tag iwth him for a week or more. Kormex is higher for the seals at $75 for all 6 seals. At this point they are about double (2-21-05). Update for anyone who is using the 6-speed xls cross reference: C89,C100, C101 Taper Bearing, MT intermediate shaft is really: C89 (cone and cup) C100 (cone) C101 (cup) Autocraft is out of the C89, but has both C100 and C101 in stock. This is just for clarification of the short description(s) in the reference. Thanks for all who have contributed! I am actually starting to look forward to this tear down ![]() |

For anyone who's interested, I can now get the springs that fit inside the synchronizers. They run $5 each. I found my own supplier.
Now I just need a source for the ball bearings and I'm all set. CRS sold me some 1/2 balls, but availability of those is hit or miss.

good job. 5 is better than pulling them outta trans kits for 45. you have someone custimize springs or just found some similiar? try applied industrial technologies for the balls. they have always been good to me for taper roller bearings.
glad you posted this info at 1 in the morning ![]()

I found a vendor with a massive catalog that seems to contain every spring known to man
The price was a little high, but since I;m not ordering 1000 at a time, I'm happy. I'm honestly surprised they sold me just 3 to start with (I ordered a total of 9 so I could try a couple different sizes and part numbers)I've got a local shop that I'm going to try for the balls on Monday. I shot one across the garage the other night, so I now have a vested interest in finding some. |

So we could tune the shift/syncro feel by changing the spring, right....?
