For what? If you are ONLY changing Synchros this isnt needed. If you are changing bearings and races throughout the tranny then you should clearance. If you are doing the Jap Gear Mod, with the new pinion (the ring doesnt affect clearances) you should clearance just the pinion assy. I wasnt able to find any exact clearance to use the solder method for determining new shim size, but I did still separate all the cases and install my total stock pinion in the trans and then spin it by hand (with cases torqued), then separated them and installed the Jap pinion and torqued the cases down and spun it by hand... they both felt identical so I was content and moved on. You could also just check the clearance of your stock Pinion and then match the clearance to the Jap Pinion.
Gatecrasher is probably the only one that can get these specs with his manual, which needs to get transalated. Rob Quote:

Is the manual in Japanese? If so where can I get one of them? My friend is very fluent in Japanese. Same friend that brought back my two synchro assemblies from Japan. Also, I know Gategrasher has a wealth of info, and if there needs to be a mirror site up and running with the same info he lists, I would be more than willing to do it. Unless Jeff at 316 has already done this.

Can someone explain to me how the heck part C16 comes off the shaft? I have the snap ring off, but there is only 1/16" of space to set the press blocks. (IE, plates only grabbing teeth) It's pressed on supertight, and i'm afraid the teeth will break before the gear moves.
Call me if you have some insight 952-240-3579 Thanks

That is wonderful news Gate. Thank you for all your time and effort you are putting into this plateform.
I have found it nessisary to replace the steel rings in some instances not only because they break, but also because the brass/bronze friction ring can cut groves into the rings, it can deposit friction material on the rings, the outer ring has dog teeth on the outside edge that I have seen get worn, and once I saw an outer ring that have impressions on it from getting lop sided and the dog teeth on the collar bit into it. Also, Jap version of CAPS will only list the triple set of rings together. That means you HAVE to buy them all at once. I believe there is a reason for that and that is why I always recommend all three rings be replaced during a rebuild. That is assuming my customers wanted the 12 month unlimited mileage warrenty I offer. (NOTE: I am not taking any new customers at this time but I will help any out with there cars.) A/V dude - Try putting the bearing splitter under the next gear down and press then both off at once. That gear giving you trouble is the driving gear for reverse. It is a .005 " press fit last I measured. That is why I recommend a 20 ton press not a 12 ton. It took me 15 tons to press one off once. I'll call you in a bit.

All factory synchronizers, except reverse, for the W5MG1 are steel. They are not brass. Should be similar for the W6MG1 since 1-2 synchros are identical for both units.

As far as these bearing clearances is it info that anyone would like to share? I am going to have to put a few new bearings/races in (not sure which ones yet) and the clearances i didnt happen to think about. This is on a 6-speed BTW.
