Gatecrasher has some good diagrams on his site which I think is linked off of like page 25 of this thread (I put it there so its easy to remember haha). Oh and there is a sticky in I think the FAQ with torque specs that Brett squeezed out of CRS.

Gatecrasher must have taken down those pictures. I also checked the FAQ, and i didn't see anything related to the tranny besides parts numbers.

I don't have anything with torque specs on it. Bret is your man for those right now.
Eventually I may post them from my service manual, but no promises. I've barely made a dent in translating the thing. (But I AM making progress ) |

For torque specs please refer to the first two post of the "Every thing you need to know about your AWD drive train" thread in the 3S Encyclopedia forum. A link to torque specs as well as TC recall info, and a basic disassembly walk through can be found there.
CRS does have the inners in but are running low on the outers now. Get'em while you still can guys. Just remember you always have Mentor Mitsubishi for a full set of brand new 1/2 synchros.

Mentor can get ALL the parts.
Their syncros are the full 3 piece assemblies for 1st and 2nd gear. Bret, have you talked to CRS in the last couple days? I ordered some more parts from them last week, and I barely got 2 complete syncro assemblies. I bought all the 1/2 sync parts they would sell me (which wasn't much). They said they'd have to keep the rest for their rebuilds. Did I clean them out, or were they just giving me a line? I wish they'd get back to me on shipping cost and when the parts would go out. I'm anxious to get that stuff. |

If you're buying parts get the input shaft seal/bearing because it's unusual and you're not likely to get it elsewhere --- unlike the rest of the bearings in the tranny. Mine was leaking a little and coated the inside of the bellhousing with gear lube ---- not too bad but headed for a clutch failure in the future. Jim Berry

I have not been able to get ahold of Bill lately. I guess he is busy selling you guys the last of those outer rings.... I was just about to buy six of them my self for two other members and my own personal transaxle. Oh well, I'll have to either live with the middle and inner or get the set through Mentor.
Last I talked to Bill he was reluctant to sell me two of the outer rings. He did say he was getting low on stock. If you don't want to wait for their stock to replenish (Lord only knows when that will be) then I recommend buying them from Mentor. Speaking of differences between the 1/2 synchro assemblies. There was a PN change in the rings and slider/hub assembly when they switched to the 18 spline output shaft. I have compaired the differences in these two set ups and they are pretty small really. The only difference I can see between the ring assemblies is that the middle ring has one less groove machined into it and the outer ring has an extra dog tooth for the 25 splines. The hubs look to be the same but the sliders has slightly different machined surfaces inbetween the dog teeth. The 18 spline surfaces are flat where as the 25 spline sliders are pointed. It appears to me as though the difference is to help the dog teeth on the outer ring mesh with the dog teeth on the slider easier. As far as I can tell, the rings are interchangeable and the hub/sliders are also interchangeable. There is a price differnece between the 18 and 25 spline middle rings. One is about $15 while the other is about $45. I highly doubt that machineing one less groove for the 25 spline middle ring would result in a $30 cost difference. Perhaps they are made of different materials? Brass verse bronze maybe? |
