back on topic...i called the guy that i know and he's going to look into some stuff on his end of it to see if he'd even be willing to do a test run. he said it might take a while though. he's also a bit leary since legal concerns might be an issue. he said he'd get in touch with his lawyer and have him check on some stuff. with any luck, he'll be able to come through for us.

one thing that i wasn't able to answer for him (which will be a large factor) is what sort of volume would he be looking at? if you guys could help me out with that, it'd be great.

With our $hitty trannies I would expect volume to be somewhat high, especially on syhcros. Looking at the schematic for the tranny there seems to be a million little parts in there but for the most part there are just a handfull that tend to break. On my rebuild I had to do all the sunchros and shift forks. Volume might be hard to calculate because I'm guessing certain times of the year are busier than others due to most ppl taking their car down for winter rebuild and maintnance...

Unless it's a shaft, gear, or case, used parts are out of the question. And even some of these parts have become hard to impossible to find. Machineing copies of these parts is too time comsuming, pricey, and too much research (initial cost) is involved. It's no more practical than what we have right now.

In any case, we need OEM parts from Getrag through Getrag them selves or Mitsubishi. Bearings and seals we can get pretty easy. Thanks to Kormex we can get output shafts and SOME used hard parts. That still leaves a lot to be desired though.

Gatecrasher - If you could get a phone number for that Getrag office to me in a PM I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Why is it hard to make synchros and blocking rings? Can they be CNCd or do they need to be cast and treated? If they need casting or forging, if I can get a sample of one, I can ask my cousin how much it would cost to make them. He owns a forging/casting company that specializes in truck/tractor parts (gears, pistons, etc.)

We've really only got two wear parts that I know of in this transmission.

Syncros, primarily 1st and 2nd, and the VCU. We don't honestly know enough about the VCUs to tell how many of them fail or partially fail, but if we ever need to replace them, we'd have a big problem on our hands.

I think I may need to renew my quest for a limited slip center differential.

I agree that the primary concern would be wear items like the synchrrs and VCU, but it is inevitable that we will need most of the internals for these transmissions at some point down the road. I would assume Getrag themselves either sells these parts, or could tell us who distributes the parts for them, and where we could purchase them. They WANT to sell the parts, not keep them stockpiled in some warehouse. Some of the parts might be common to other Getrag transmissions, such as springs and such. Our focus should be on the unique/hard to reproduce parts such as the gears and synchros.

Cool Re: Getrag 440/446 parts.

I picked up a set of complete 5-spd synchros (cones, rings, hubs, sleeves) years ago (way before CRS made them available). At the time, there were only 10 of these sets in existence. Jack T (xwing) arranged a deal with Getrag in Germany for 10 sets. I bought my set for $600 from someone in on the original purchase. Fairly detailed pics of these 5-spd parts can be seen on my web page below. It looks to me that metallurgy and machining won't be so simple.

I have couple of contacts with Getrag USA in MI. They are looking into getting us 440/460 parts right now and I should hear back from them by tomorrow.

Can't promise anything but we'll see what happens.

That's great to hear but I think the problem may be that they want to sell these parts in BULK. In which case the best bet would probably be to have a single company buy in bulk and sell to the general public. It would really help if the dealerships would start servicing these transaxles. Do we have any other Mitsubishi or Dodge techs around here? If so, then please speak up now.
