I had heard some ppl saying not to use a gear puller b/c of chipping gears/breaking teeth. Is this just an isolated few or should i not use the puller? I'm removing 1st and maybe second gear
Also(NOOB QUESTION), once all the components of the shaft are off how do i put them back on? I thought ppl said you don't need a press for 1/2nd gear work.

Well If you have a monster sized gear puller you could reach more then 1st gear but a press will make life so much easier. I originally tried to do mine with just a gear puller that I rented from auto zone. It was too small to do the job effectively and I ended up finding a press. You should be able to find a press at most auto/machine shops and It shouldn't cost that much if anything just to have em pressed off.

Well I guess anything over 8" might work. Do you live in a real small town? There has to be more then one place with a press. What about just walking in the door of an industrial wearhouse/complex pretending like you work there and then just ask around for a press?

Just about any hydraulic press will work. The harder part for me was finding blocks of steel that fit the round shape of the gears. To spread the contact over a greater number of teeth. Do you know what I am saying? Sort of a big ( shape. One for each side. I never did find any that fit perfect. It did take quite a bit of force also. I was fortunate enough to use a press with a force gauge on it however I was too focused on catching the shaft when it fell to watch to see how many actual pounds of force was required. As long as that one c-clip ring is out the gears will come off even if it seems like it will break.
I would try some of the local auto shops or even a dealership just to see if they have a press. Or ask around for other backyard mechanics because presses aren't that expensive and more guys have them then you may think. |
