Hi guys so for the last couple weeks I have been getting a vibration which I though was a bent rim I had on the car. I left the car alone until I could get a hold of another set of wheels to see if it was really the wheels causing the vibration. I Put some wheels on and took the car for a ride and the freaking Transfercase locked up at 15mph
I didnt hit anything and I am very glad I wasnt going fast, weird because I didnt see any leaks . I purchased a good transfercase from someone and today I dropped the car off at the mechanics. I knew that my carrier bearings were shot so I went ahead and purchased those as well a few weeks back.Well today I get a call from my mechanic and he says that the driveshaft is "Frozen" and that I probably needs a whole new driveshaft. What do you guys recommend I do I am pretty low on funds and this is my daily driver. I did read about the Carbon fiber Driveshaft and about aluminum and looked into a few used once. I dont know what to do and I really cant be doing this twice I want to do it once and forget about it. Any input would be greatly appriciated. Thanks a lot! |

You've already mentioned your options. You can go aftermarket and get a carbon fiber or aluminum shaft, or just a stock replacement. However, I question how your driveshaft can be "frozen". It was working fine before the transfer case locked up. And now the transfercase has been replaced. The only other things that can keep the driveshaft from turning if the tranny, transfer case, and rear diff are ok, is the carrier bearings or u-joints. And I've never heard of a failure of these parts causing the driveshaft to "freeze". Are you sure there's not another problem that's keeping the driveshaft from turning, like the rear diff or tranny? Are you sure it was the transfer case that actually locked up?

Well I can actually drive the car now I didnt mean to say that the drivetrain is frozen sorry, I did a bad job explaining I guess, The car actually went in for a install of a transfer case and replacement of the carrier bearings. The mechanic just told me that driveshaft is in bad condition and I am guessing he meant the U joints because he said they are probably not something that is possible to service. So af far as I understood he said get a new driveshaft, my car has 130,000 miles on it. Again I can drive it I drove about 15 miles back from his shop. Any idea what he could of been talking about and maybe something can be fixed I am just looking for advice here. Thanks

He is deffinatly not trying to make money from me he is a very good friend of my dads and works on all of my 3000gt's and I never had a problem with him. So I have about 130K miles on the car and I guess that what he meant tha tthe U joints are shot. What do I do in this case??? I think thats what he meant because he said to save you time and money I am not gonna replace the carrier bearings now I will just let you get the driveshaft first....... Should I bother repairing the U joints or what should I do. Thanks a lot guys!
