so i was driving today, and i speed shifted from 2nd to 3rd. it grinded a bit, but still went into gear. I then went to 4th and was cruising, then tried to downshift to 3rd and it grinds...so i pull out and put it in neatrul, then attempt 3rd again..once again it grinds. I try second, no grinding at all. so i'm thinking its my 3rd gear synchro? and yes the clutch was depressed all the way..the clutch does need adjusted tho, i have to much freeplay.
so i'm looking for some suggestions. if i change the tranmission fluid, which is more recommended? the Redline or the Pennsoil Synchomesh? if i also adjust the clutch..will this solve my grinding whoa's?? |

I would recommend the Redline, or the GL-4 stuff someone recommends (Blue 1G VR4 on here) I think it's Amsoil. I have no hard facts but I wouldn't risk the Synchromesh, it seems like some people have more material/metals drain out of the transaxle using that fluid.
As far as the clutch, I would adjust it to where it should be, but if that was the problem all of the gears would grind wouldn't they? Hopefully that plus a fluid change helps but sooner or later they'll probably be on they're way out. You can also try to double-clutch downshift from now on to help save the synchros and see if those are the issue. That combined with a relatively slow upshift will be easier on them in general. Good luck!

well i changed all the fluids in the car 2nite. and despite changing the transmission fluids, it still barks in 3rd. soooo...idk what to do. probably just try to baby the thing until i can find some money to either rebuild the transmission or buy a different one. which reminds me of a question..will a 6spd transmission mount up to my '91 vr4 motor???

the six speed will only work with your motor if you get the transfer case too as they have a different spline count
As for the trans grinding try to slow shift into third or double clutch to be easy on it and it should not grind

These are the things you will need to change to a 6-speed. You need a lot more then just the transfer case.

I have been looking into this for a long time. It makes absolutelty no sense to buy a used tranny unless you're getting a super deal from someone you know is selling a good unit. On ebay you'll see tranny's selling for $1000 to $1300 or more that have 50k, 80k, even 100k or more that "worked great when the tranny was removed". The " internet junkyard" network is even more expensive. You can get a freshly rebuilt (or have yours rebuilt) for $1400 at places like Kormex, Jack's or the "$600 plus parts" rebuild that you see on this board. They are from reliable and trusted vendors known to this board. I couldn't imagine buying a used unit with 85k unit for a few buck less knowing that, even if the tranny was good when it was dropped, the synchros will grinding soon.

For instructions on changing the trans oil, check out the video on this thread of 3S PowerHour. Our first episode was changing the trans oil etc.

Here is the thing fluid change is only going to help you prolong it.
I use the SychroShift but it is the same as the sychromesh fluid. It works well but you will still need to change out your 3rd gear friction ring. Do the right thing unlike what I did, do the other gears also. I did just 1st and 2nd and not third. Year later I just finished doing the 3rd gear also. Those are the most popular because they are the most shifted gears. I don't use the Redline although it may work just as well but I have had awesome luck with the synchroShift fluid. Good Luck -John
