The dowel pins can be changed with the tranny still in the car. I just finished getting mine back together. The thud is gone, but I still have a bit of a clunk. I am assuming this clunk is coming from inside the transaxle (ie. worn VCU discs) or perhaps the driver/tranny mounts. I'm going to try changing these mounts next as I already have F/R solid mounts.

you can take up half of this slack by re orienting the planetary dowel pins as they get beat along with the slots in the vcu

That is cool you did it with the tranny still in the car. So far I have about 450 miles on my welded dowel pins. The large clunk is defiantley gone, Although I did swtich from a stage 3 clutch to a factory clutch during the process, so idk if the less aggressive clutch also helped absorb some of the shock. idk. But i do still have a mystery clunk that is intermitant(can't spell). Only if I accelerate quickyl or change gears quickly it clunks in the rear. But it makes the same clunk when I go over a bump so im thinking it suspension/bushing related. Its a 91 with original suspension components. But I'm glad I got the initial huge thud gone, it was like a earth quake. When I ever I hit the gas it wou thud, now I can slap the gas pedal without makign it thud like it used to. Now just have to hunt down my body rattles and cluncks lol. Thanx for everyone reading and adding to this thread.
