Default Bad Thud in drivetrain, videos.......help

91 VR4. Makes a horrible thud as the drivetrain is engaged, or a load is applied and removed. if you pull the clutch out quickly it makes the thud and it feels thru the whole car. If I have the clutch fully engaged, just cruising and I tap the gas quickly and slightly , the thud will occur, as if there is play somewere in the drivetrain, and the taping of the gas allows it to go back and forth, if that makes sence. Very similar to a bad engine mount but Im sure its not a mount. if cruising in higher gears the thud is less intense when you tap the gas. I just rebuilt the tranny, the vcu dowel pins looked good, as did the teeth on the output shaft(both ends), I am thinking its coming from that area, but still don't know.

To recreate the thud sound for the videos, I am popping the clutch quickly, not fully letting it out, just poppin it in and out. Keep in mind during the vids.

Car is jacked up.

The first video is of the rear drive shaft section(camera pointing up from the ground) as I apply the clutch repeatedly to make the thud sound.

Second video is of the first carrier towards the front of the car then onto the Transfer case, then directly underneath tranny, same scenario. doesn't look like the shaft is banging from bad carriers.

Third video is with the Transfer case removed and popping the clutch. its not as intense i think maybe because of the load from the rear drive train is gone.

Clutch is a cheesey XTD 6 puck(came with the car). I put a socket and rachet onto the output shaft to move it back and forth the see how much play. There is very very small amount before the front wheels start to spin, but the 4th video is of me moving the racket back and forth, almost making a clank sound in the tranny.....not sure if that is the cause or if its normal. I also have like 10-12 mm of play in the rear diff, which i am taking care of soon, that could be the thud, but it sounds like its coming from the front......idk

Any ideas would be greatly apprecited. thank you for watching.

My car is doing the same thing too, and I just replaced the motor mounts thinking it was those. Interested to know if you found out the cause.

Wow very good helpful videos, unfortunately i was gonna say its something broken in the rear, because of how the rear sub frame bushings were jumping around, but after looking i say look at the front wheel driveshaft. In the 1 video the TC video still on the car it looks like the 1 half shaft is hitting something, cant really tell. But i would look at that and then double check the rear it wouldnt hurt. Good luck.

Edit: Other than that i would say you might've broke a set of pinion gears somewhere, or stripped your output shaft bein a 91 vr4...

Default Re: Bad Thud in drivetrain, FIXED IT, VID AND PICS!

FINALLY got this taken care of. After adjusting the backlash in the rear diff and a new driveshaft and STILL having that clunking sound , I went through everypart in the drivetrain to check for play. I narrowed it down to somewhere in the center diff region by this method.........

Took the transfer case off exposing the output shaft. Now obiously you can't drive the car like this due too damage to the VCU, but what I did is just pop the clutch in and out real quick to try to simulate the clunk,.... this temporalily loads the drive train. car was on jack stands) NO CLUNK!! with the transfercase off. The splines on my output shaft on the TC side are in amazing shape, its the VCU side were the teeth were almost worn down to nothing and the dowel pins in the VCU were worn so bad, it was almost 3/16 in of play between the dowel pins and their respective holes. These two areas were the only areas in the center diff that would make that clunk. Check out these pics, then watch the video to see it in action.

I'm not a master welder, but good enough to get the job done. Had to grind the weld down to get it to fit into the center diff housing, but I cut a V into the vcu and planetary gear set to get a nice deep weld so when i ground it down it would not remove substantial strengh.

As a side note, I know alot of people ask about the "XTD" brand clutches.....
The car had a new XTD clutch installed right before I bought the car, The 6 puck one. It was very harsh, but u get used to it and it held nice. The big problem was it had alot of play on the input shaft to the clutch disc splines compared to the OEM clutch I put in instead. That could be a clunk noise as well, idk. Hope this helps......

Wow. Nice work.

This is something I've been trying to get to the bottom of for years now. See here: Backlash in the Transaxle?.

Its strange though. Your dowel pin holes are really hammered out. My old VCU, as well as my new one, have holes that look pristine and I still have a load of slop from this part.
