Don`t know but I`ve got a similar clunk, can`t see any reason why they machine them to give 2mm of play, it`s boviously going to wear the holes out eventually!

Have you a lot of radial play when you turn the prop shaft with all wheels stationary, I have a fair amount in mine and I`ll be looking into wether it`s from the rear diff or from the front. It`s just going to get worse as every time it clunck something is wearing out somewhere..

Now that I have the new VCU there seems to be much less radial play in the propeller shaft. I have yet to take the car out for a spin, so I can't comment on whether or not the new VCU has fixed the clunking.

Bad news. I still have a pretty major clunk. However, its not as bad as the old clunk.

The clunking is greatly improved in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. It used to be most noticecable in 2nd, but now it is almost non-existent. In 4th it starts to get noticeable and in 5th it is just plain disgusting.... what a POS.

Try to eliminate the engine (crank walk) and motor mounts by doing this :

1.) put the car in 1st then speed up
2. ) press the cluth and put it in neutral
3.) with the car still coasting and the clutch depressed put it in 1st .

Now if you get a clunk , its comming from the transmission back to the differential , If you don't then its from the clutch forward

I hope that helps

I've had the same problem for years. I've tried and adjusted 2 rear diffs, adjusted shims in the transfer case, replaced the VCU, installed 3 different output shafts, replaced the transfer case input spool, and had the transmission rebuilt and checked for slack. I also installed a 2 pc aluminum driveshaft and a new carrier bearing, and new front halfshafts. Each time I did one of the above, the clunking improved for a few weeks or months, but eventually came back. The biggest improvement was when I replaced the VCU. But now it's worse than ever, so I've resigned to the fact that it's just terminal at this point and have gotten used to it.

Man, that's depressing. Maybe I should just put my car down and out of its misery...

With that being said, I don't want to give up on it just yet. Are you able to turn your propeller shaft or your output shaft by hand to elicit the backlash? It seems as though you've replaced pretty much every component of your driveline. Where do you think your backlash is coming from?

Yes I can. And the thumping and banging seeems to be coming from the rear of the car. It makes noise during both when you get on the throttle and when you let off. Maybe it's time to adjust the rear diff again. Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm just letting Dr.Dex know he's not alone.

i know its a pain but have you tried replacing all of the rear suspension bushings including the ones that hold the rear diff

when i was rwd i would get all sorts of noise from the rearend becasue all of the bushings were done.

the fact that it comes back irks me thou
