Default Re: Backlash in the Transaxle?

Update: Got the transaxle back together (with the custom planetary dowel pins) and I installed some solid F/R motor mounts. The clunk has improved to some degree. It used to be a loud thud that would shake the car and you could feel it in your seat. Now it is less noticeable and I don't think it would bother me if I wasn't so sensitized to the problem. With that being said, I don't know if I'd recommend it as a worthwhile modification. It does take up some extra slack, however, I still have some slop in my transaxle and I think the only way to fix it is to buy a new one.

mateenvr4: Did you replace the tranny & driver side mounts as well? I've replaced my F/R mounts with solids and it has minimally helped the clunk.

I`ve got solids all round and have the clunk, having said that full solids are a worth while upgrade.

Did you take any pics while you were in the gearbox?.

Tranny end cover off:

Bar in the end of the intermediate shaft. Used to pry the gears away so you can get the VCU/planetary assembly out:

Slide hammer, used to pull off the end cover (much easier than using blocks of wood and a hammer):

Like I said before, I can't say for sure if this was a worthwhile upgrade. I still do have a clunk and I can't say for sure if it was the motor mounts that helped or if it was the new pins. What I can say for sure is that it has taken up all slop between the planetary and VCU, which is how this part should have been designed in the first place.

If someone wanted to make their own, they'd need about 10 inches of 5/8'ths 4340 HTSR steel and they'd have to approach a machine shop with their parts in hand.
