Hey fellas.. can anybody give me a rundown on what kind of equipment/tools are necessary to actually just get the trans apart? Not sure what I could be getting myself into, but I'd rather NOT BUY tranny #4, but possibly bring in one for repair and do it on the side... and oh yea.. NO EXPERIENCE
lol.. did a swap! but thats about it..thanks!

10mm socket, 12mm socket, 14mm socket.
Gear puller, 10 ton press. Vice. Flathead screwdriver. I think that's it .. haven't done one in a couple years.

Any specifics on the gear puller? where can I get one? I think I would be able to find a press.. is the press needed to get the casing open? or just for putting back together..
thanks.. and yea.. it sucks that I'm looking into my 4th trans but thanks for the info before about the swap.. wasnt too bad |

Just a normal gear puller from autozone or whatever ... don't need anything expensive.
You'll need a hammer too do get your cases apart. Take all the bolts out and take it apart. When you pull your sliders watch out for the balls / springs .. they are tiny and when lost they will never be found. |

Sure you don't, Scotty.

..."amateur transmission rebuild"...isn't that a contradiction in terms?
![]() Good luck with that! I hope it ends up being more successful than "amateur parachute packing"...or "amateur snake milking"...or "amateur particle accelerator contruction"... ![]()

GTONW is good to go

its a pain but its doable, don't smack at the casing with a hammer or try to press the casing together you'll end up with new guts and fubar casing. it should all slide back together without effort, its just parting the old gaskets thats all.
oh if it seems like the bellhousing wont part from the case its possible you left a bolt in ![]()

Its not my first choice of transmission to learn on, but all manual transmissions are basically the same.
Not much for special tools needed. Its just a lot of parts and taking several pictures with a digital camera along the way to help with re-assembly will be beneficial. There are some write-ups around the internet as well as the service manual which do a great job of showing what you're getting into. Its not that difficult, but can result in disaster when you forget what part goes where and how and why.

A slide hammer does wonders to take the case a part.
