It doesn't matter If it's a 6 speed conversion. When you do a 6sp conversion you have to use a 6sp trans, transfercase, driveshaft, rear end and linkage. So you end up with a 6sp car just like it came from the factory. On my car the linkage was fine in the original car but they somehow wouldn't work when I installed them. I could force on the shifter and linkage and it wouldn't move into reverse. When I disconnected the linkage and the shifter stillwouldn't go in reverse Iknew it wasn't in the trans.

My car wouldn't shift manually at the trans either. I had the car at the NG06 and some of the best trans guys were there and everyone thought mine was in the trans also.My car you could pry on the shifter arms or force the shifter ashard as you wanted and it seemed like something in the trans was holding it from going into reverse. I disconnected the shifter cables and then tried to shift it manually at the trans and it worked. I thought this might cause this car also because he just had the trans out to change the clutch. Maybe his cables got screwed up while he did the repairs. When I pull an engine or trans I always put the cables out of the way but they still can get bent if not careful.

I suppose some bent cables are a new possibility. Never thought of that. I guess now we'll have to wait and see. To be honest I would try your solution first since he won't have to pull his tranny to test this out.

I am willing to bet that the reverse syncro is bound to the reverse gear. That happened to my 3rd gear since the gear is steel and the syncro brass the syncro can sometimes get bound to the gear. I would say that checking the linkage is the first step but you said the linkage is free and clear. The first time i rebuilt my tranny i put a wiring harness clip in the way of the linkage and it stopped it from going into reverse.....For a second when it happens you think to yourself...."Do i really need reverse?......Fuck of course i need reverse!!!" As for your other question who the Guru is I would say Bretbrinkman is extremely knowledgable and very helpful but he is also very busy. Hope he dosent mine me dropping his name but he is very familiar with the internals of this tranny. Goodluck.
