Default 6spd reverse, 1st, and 2nd gone

Just happened out of the blue, the transmission has been smooth and never had any problems. I got home today and was going to back into my parking space, and reverse wouldn't go. So I tried to shift into 1st and it goes straight into 3rd, no grinding, its just that 1st, 2nd, and reverse are not accessible. The only thing I here is a slight whine coming from the transmission when the cluth is not pressed. Any ideas?

Edit#1 O.k. let the car cool off and had some dinner before I got pissed at it, went out played with the gears, found reverse, but the throw is extra long it seems. Also no matter where you try to shift, the gear lever returns the the center position, whether you push it forward or backwards, it just returns to center. Its almost as if you have to manually hold the shifter in place for it to engage a gear otherwise it just returns to the center. I'll be able tear into it some more tomorrow when I have some day light.

I would check all of the cable brackets and connections at the top of the trans. Sounds like something came loose under there. If that is not it, you might have an intermediate shaft bearing failure...

Will do I gave it a cursory look and noticed just odd movement in the shifer assembly, but it was getting dark. Hopefully, it is something simple in the shifter cables. The transmission has been wonderful only 80K on it. No grinding and always strong.

O.k. turned out to be something rather simple. I started checking the shifter cables and when I came to the lower bracket that the shifter cable connects to it was missing a part. By that there is a plastic rectangular piece that fits on on a pin from the bracket. Apparently it had fallen off. Luckily I had another around, put it on an problem solved.
