Default 6G74 Magna AWD - Manual Conversion

Hey guys,

I currently own a 2003 Mitsubishi Magna AWD. They have the 6G74 engine in them, with drivetrain parts from the Evo 6 and 7. More Specifically:

- Front diff - open unit from the Evo 6 RS/Evo 7
- Centre diff - viscous coupling unit from the Evo 6
- Rear diff - LSD from the Evo 6 RS/Evo 7

Now for some reason, Mitsubishi Australia decided to only to produce the AWD version in automatic, so I want to convert it to manual to release some more potential.

I was hoping someone on here has already done something like this, as you have an AWD drivetrain and have perhaps done a 6G74 swap or something along those lines...

There have been a few people from Australia who are in the process of doing this conversion, however they keep running into problems. They have been trying to use an Evo 7 gearbox, but have issues with the diff ratio in the gearbox and the shape of the bell housing. Hopefully they will get this working, but it will require quite a bit of customisation.

An easier answer for me would be to find a manual 5 or 6 speed gearbox from a suitable JDM model mitsubishi. So does anyone have any recommendations as to which gearbox would be suitable for me to use??

- Sam

Is your transmission on the drivers side or the passenger side?

We really have no such car here. I wish though.
Change the rear dif gear if that is a problem.
Seems that only the bellhousing would be a problem with the swap.

Magna is a Diamente for those not from australia...pretty similar to some of the US DSM community I think

Edit: and my apologies for the influx of Aussie's touting magna's (which are a great aussie whale mobile..yes..WORSE than the GTO is already )

Well I couldn't resist chiming in here...
I've got a soft spot for Magna's - I had a TR and was seriously considering buying a supercharged TJ VRX or one of the AWD models. I bought a GTO instead.

I'm guessing that the transmission in the AWD Magnas are on the passenger side (of a RHD vehicle). Making it impossible to bolt up say a 6-speed getrag tranny. For the same reasons why those of us thinking of a 6G74 upgrade need to find one out of a Pajero instead of a Jspec Diamante.

Another option might be something out of the newer model Galant/Legnum VR4s or possibly the Eclipse.

Thanks for that! This might be a stupid question, but what exactly is the issue with taking a transmission from a motor which has it located on the opposite of the engine?

Yeah, cant do it. But I could use any transmission you use because my Dodges have the transmission on the same side

So I would enjoy you finding a solution.

Sammy....I reckon look into getting a custom adpator plate made for an EVO Gearbox.
Although, Your car will be off the road for quite some time if you undertake something like this...
