as for the 5-spd bellhousing its similiar to the 6-spd but u have to remember the 6-spd has one more gear in the same alotted space as the 5-spd. i know the gears are thinner but getrag could have taken material from other spots. also the gears themselves are different ratios so you could get more force pushing those gears apart on the 6-spds.

i dont know of anyone splitting their 5-spd open. matt has put how many launches on his trannies and it seems he just looses the t-case but the trans keeps going.

people have broken their bellhousing where the t-case mounts but that happens because the t-case blew and took shit out with it.

looks good trevor. hope it all works out for ya. hate to say it but i think t-case gears are your next weak link

I agree on the t-case gears. Luckily there are already some companies producing them for DSM's so we can probably contract them to make something for us.

The t-case gears or the rear diff gears will be next.

Advanced timing... or lowered timing so he can run more boost. Trevor, are you still using the 14Bs, or have you since gone larger?

I've switched to EVO3's.

I need to advance the timing because there is no more boost to be had. I'm running with the boost controller maxed out (35.6 psi)...actual boost pegs out around 30-31 psi at 4600-4700 then drops to 29.1-29.3 psi from 6-7k. Back when I had the 14b's I ran with the wastegates disconnected and the boost was within 0.1 psi of the run before when I had the boost controller connected and set at max.

This is an old pic (14b's) but you get the idea:

You're giving me heart palpitations here. Stop with that kind of talk.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but I got a couple of questions.
I picked up a spare 6-speed and want to do this mod and install this tranny back into my car once my rebuild is finished.
When you sent them the bellhousing did you remove all the gear races/seals or did they do that? And when you put them back in with the shims did you re-check the preload on the bearings to make sure they were still within specs? I'm guessing you installed new seals on it all.

Appreciated
Bob

I took them the completely assembled bellhosing and they did the mod. I didn't have to remove anything.

I didn't bother checking preloads. I figured I'd find out soon enough if there were any problems.

Same here, sent the fully ass tranny.

It melted one of the plastic oil flow guard things inside of one of the races a bit, but nothing that hurt it at all.

No issues whatsoever other than having to sand the races a bit with 1000 grit sandpaper to get some of the grime off and get them back up to polish.

Thanks Trevor.
That would work out great and save me the time of doing it. Picked up this used 6-speed for a killer deal and damn it looks almost new, even has all these plastic plugs that go over all the open ports and shafts like from the factory for shipping purposes.
Gonna call them today and see what the turn-around would be, hopefully quick as I should be getting my short block back this week and it would be nice to put this tranny in instead of my orginal.

yea it probably is better to let slag get on the outer race rather than pull them all out and have slag get in the bore. that would be a lot harder to get rid of properly
