Default 5 gear box in 6 gear car?

First of all, excuse me for my english cause im from spain.

I have a 1994 3000GT VR4 imported from USA and my gear box broke down a couple of months ago. I bought a used gear box, and my mechanic needed some parts of the other box to fix it and do some kind of "manual" works to fix it.

I have already taken the car and itīs impossible to get the 6th gear and the rear gear appears when i try to, so the gear box makes a big noise (of course!).

With the car completly stopped i have practiced with the gear box and everytime i try to do the same i have told before, the rear gea comes. And as i remember from my original gear box, to get the rear gear the movement was kind of "complicated", i mean....you have to move the stick (sorry, i dont know the english for it), twice, one to the right (out of the H scheme) and the backwards to the corner. But now i think that movement is missing at all. So when i try the 6th, the rear gear appears.

Also i was looking for it when i move the stick to me (in the movement position to me, backward), 2 and 4, but not 6, only rear. The 1, 3 and 5 works good.

The question is.....have they fit a 5 gear box in my car? and was that reason to do those "manual" works, right?

I have no contacted my mechanic again, yet because i have alreary takne the car and he will be out for a couple of days.

Was it a fraud? i really trust him cause he has owned 2 3000GT years ago and itīs the only mechanic i let touch mine one since i bought it 3 years ago. But i didnt expect this from him.

Even if you do plenty of "manual" works is it possible to fit in?

If the answer is YES then it means it will probably be a 5 gear box and if the answer is NO, (but not at all), then something is badly assembled, or maybe....i dont understand nothing at all.

I can not wait to know the truth from him before he comes, so if some of you have any guess, i would appreciate it.

Thanks for you reading and your answers are very welcome.

It sounds very much like you have a 5 speed transmission in your car.

Here is an easy way to tell:

Remove your passenger side wheel and the wheel well plastic, so you can see the end of the transmission. You will see one large black circle, and either 3 or 4 smaller circles. If there are 3, it is a 5 speed. If there are 4, it is a 6 speed.

You could also try looking for the plate on the bell housing. W5xXXXX = 5 speed, W6XXXX = 6 speed. You could also look at the transfer case, a search should bring up some pics to show the difference.

If you do have a 5 speed gear box in your car, be sure your mechanic installed the popper rear differential.
US Spec cars use 3.545:1 for 5 speed cars and 3.303:1 for 6 speed transmissions.

Thank you both of you for your comments.
He really assembled my car a 5 gear box and i feel fouled about it cause he has been my mechanic for more than 5 years and all the cars we have in my hole family go with him and my friends are with him cause of me.

Learn about it: never trust any mechanic for life and keep every single transaction as it were the first one. Confidence sometimes turns against you.

My next question is....is there any problem for the engine to "wear" a 5 gear box when originally has a 6 one?

Thank you again to all of you.

(feed back information: the transmission seems to run good but when you stop pulling down the clutch and your are reducing gears to reduce your speed, a metal whistle appears. He says it will dissapear in a few miles, but who knows now.......would you trust him again in such a thing?)

carlitos:

I am not even sure how he did it. As far as I knew, you could not bolt a 5speed transfer case to a 6 speed transmission. With a 5 speed transfer case, you would have needed a new driveshaft and rear end too. So I'm baffled as to how he could have just thrown a 5 speed in there.

Is it possible for you to take and upload some pictures of the transmission / transfer case / rear differential in the car?

Sorry to hear it.

You are right Ryan, when i bought the gear box i didnīt expect it came with the transfer case but it came all together.

Maybe thatīs the reason why the supplier told me he had a transmission that would fit in my 6 gear car. He ensure me it was a 6 gear transmission. But...la la la la la la la.....

And of course, my mechanic assembled the 5 gear transmission with the transfer case for 5. So i have a broken 6 gear transmission and a bit damaged (as the mechanic says, probably to justify the change of the transfer case when i asked about the piece), transfer case in my room now.

This weekend i will try to pull up the car and take a couple of pictures.

The good thing is that it works perfectly and i can shift without any worry and use it as a normal car. Before it broke down i did it but the sinchro wasnīt totally right.

We keep in touch.

Thanks again.

Carlos

I have remembered i had a couple of pics from the suplier and an email where he says itīs a 6 gear transmission, so....

I will try to take more pics (assembled to the car), but in a few days if you keep interested on it.

After talking with some friends of mine who own 3000 GT also, i have taken the decission of giving back the transaction with that supplier because heīs not following the terms we agreed. Although, this is an easy way to say that he has fouled me. Concious? blinded by the money? 1500 euros (for EU citizens is now terrible cheap to buy there in the US).

And with that money complete the downpayment i made to Mitsubishi when i asked for a new one and they dindīt have no idea about when it was possible to serve it.

If any of you are interested on it, the price keeps being the same 1.500 euro (international transfer money order), plus any kind of taxes, customs rights, shipping, handling and other costs to put the good in your hands.

Do i have to keep dreaming?

Thank you for reading me, im a bit upset, as you can see, and writing these words helps me, and i really feel so glad when i have answers concerning this fact.

Have a good weekend, we keep in touch buddies!

Yep that's a 5 speed alright.

Will you have them remove it and put in the correct one? What can you do at this point? How did they even get the driveshaft to work?

Thatīs right. Iīm going to put the correct one.
I have lost 400 euros assembling it, and i will spend other 400 euros in the same operation, but i think it will run better for the engine and driving.

I have no idea how he did it but he requested me some parts of the old trnasmission. I really expect him not to have made any strange welding on it, because maybe the 5 gear box would be damaged or who knows...(and probably no money back).

Hi again,

after a few phone calls and requesting information from one of the million officers that the supllier has, they have admitted there was a mistake and.....they really have a 6 gear transmission and the confused when handling and packaging, so they are going to re send it and take back the one i have now.

The bad thing is that i have spent money in assembling it but i will try to charge it to my mechanic in order to do the work for free.

The good thing is that i have tested his honesty and trustness in him.

Thanks again and i stop talking, iīve been doing it so much.
