From what I understand from another thread and the av-pro site, it's not only a matter of changing the capacitors. The board has to be cleaned and the circuitry has to be checked and fixed if necessary.

I'd like to know what makes you think your ECU is bad in a 1998 VR4.

I just pulled mine out today and one of the capacitors has a slight brown goo at the base. Yes there is more than simply replacing the capacitors. You can clean the board with acetone. My board is a 92 and looks pristine except for this one spot. I think for a couple bucks I will try to clean it and replace the capacitors. I am pretty comfortable with electronics, and do not believe I will destroy anything. Worst case I send it for a rebuild and had a $6 crack at fixing it myself.
