one of my teachers gave me a 2001 dell dimension 8100 computer that I want to turn into a car PC to datalog my 95' vr4. I can make a new tower out of aluminum sheet metal, but what do I need to install on it to get it to work with my eonon 1012e 7" touch screen. I'm assuming evoscan 2.7, but idk how the touch screen thing will work, and what to do about the resolution difference.
You really can't make a car PC out of a full ATX mobo. Most guys use mini ATX mobo and a VroomPC case or equivalent.
My rig is fitted inside a VroomPC case and a DC to DC converter as your power supply. The system is tied into your cars electrical so you can't use a conventional PC PSU.
The touch screen plugs into the PC just as a desktop one does but it's a touch screen. Only difference.
ok...but all my stereo has as an input is aux rca...how will the comp recognize the touch as an input....Im not exactly up to speed with my input device knowledge. and also all I want to do is datalog with it, so will it be that bad if i use a full size mobo?
A full size mobo is going to have fitment issues. It's way to large and unstable inside a car. Your touch screen will plug into the pc via AGP or DVI just like a conventional desktop PC. You output the sound from the PC sound card through an 1/8" stereo jack Y cable with RCA jacks on the other ends. That will go to your amp.
that's really too slow just to data log?...I'm not trying to sound like a dick, but if I wipe it clean and clock it, I don't think it will have a problem, and the box is going where my trunk buckets used to be. so space really isn't an issue.
and I'm not going to run a sound card to reduce the power draw, but the stereo doesn't have a dvi or agp plug in? so I guess that's where I'm confused as to how the screen will work.

Hey man, it was your question. All I did was answer it. I build all my computers so it's not like I don't know what I'm talking about.
What OS you running? minimum of 512MB if you're going to run XP. If Vista or 7, I wouldn't use less than a gig. That PC you listed can support up to 2 gigs. I would max it out. Hell, I run 4 on my desktop. The 2 that my laptop comes with makes the PC usable with Windows 7 but I wish it had more. A lot goes on when you run datalogging software.
You need to make sure the components are going to be safe in the trunk. You can't have heat and you can't have bumps. Once again, ATX mobo's were not intended to be used in cars.
