Default 3rd gear high rpm then downshift to 2nd gear (oops)

Well yesterday I did a pull on the hiway in 3rd and tried to up shift but instead downshifted to 2nd . This was just for one quick moment, as soon as I felt the car go into gear I hit the clutch (I didn't even fully release the clutch in 2nd)and put it into 4th than 5th. I drove it slowly putting into all gears as I gained somemore speed and everything seemed fine so I drove home. I guess I got lucky.

Today I decided to remove all my emmissions and vac lines, after that was all done I fired up the car and checked all my vac hoses and connectors. It was all good so I went for a cruise.

Ever so faintly I could hear some chirping from the engine bay but only at idle. As soon as I gained any speed it would go away as I came back it was a little louder and while I scratched my head looking for the issue it keept getting louder and louder but still if I rev it up it goes away. I think it might be the harmonic balancer but I'm not sure.

Would it be possible to rip the dampener from that event? Is there anything else that could be causing this?

I dont beleave the emmisions removal could have anything to do with it but I figured I'd mention it anyways since I noticed the chirping right after it..

I appologise about the novel.

Thanks

Ok looks like it is the crank pulley. As I rev the engine up the pulley moves side to side a little bit and shakes as it does it. Unless this is normal for some weird reason looks like I need a new pulley.

Thats ok, I'll take it since it could have been alot worse

Angry Re: 3rd gear high rpm then downshift to 2nd gear (oops)

i did this exact same thing 3rd gear pull and popped it in second ( i know i should learn how to drive appernetly) after that my battery light came on and i pulled over and popped the hood to see that my alternator/ac belt popped off, after trying to get the belt back on i finally relized that my crank pulley is cocked uneven, i was just wondering if this is my harmonic dampener, some how warping or cracked, and if i just need to replace this (car seems to still be running and idling fine)? and also is this common for 3's ??

While the car is idleing take a flashlight and shine it on the crank pulley then rev the engine up some. If the pulley moves or shakes back and forth at all chances are you need a new pulley.

It is common on an older harmonic balancer for it to dry out and crack and ultimitly ripping it in half, you probably helped it more by mis shifting like I did. Just dont leave it to fall apart on its own, this happened to my old dsm and it sliced up my timing belt cover pretty good almost getting through it .

Make sure the bolt on the harmonic balancer is actually tight. I did the same thing a while back and it wobbled back and forth.
