Default eastern NC

Anyone here in the eastern part of North Carolina? My car seems to have some lifter tick and kind of a strange idle along with some other things that I don't know exactly how to fix.

First, welcome to 3si. Second, you'll probably get a better response if you discribe what's going on. There should be a few people close to you but good to hear what others say too. Good luck

Well the lifter tick started out to be quiet but has gotten louder. I don't think its a rod knocking but I'm not completely sure. The check engine light comes on as well with the 505 error code about the idle. It used to be very high above 1200 and I needed to get it to pass the emissions test so the IAC was replaced on it which made the check engine light go off but then it came right back on and the idle is usually at around 900 to 1100. Could it be a vacuum leak somewhere? If it is then how would I check for that?
P.S. The car has 165,000 miles on it and the person I bought it from only had it for about 2 months and did not know if the 120k had been done (he seemed to not know much about the car) so it might not have been done at all. The car was a "fleet car" (from the carfax) for the first few years of its life so Im not sure what that means and if they took care of the car since they put a lot of miles on it.

Umm, there's a lot of Eastern North Carolina...

You should probably do a 120k on it just to get all the important stuff done with first.

Well most of the people in North Carolina seem to be in Charlotte or Raleigh. How much does the 120k cost about?

Umm... I had 2 of them done at dealerships and they cost around $1100-1400. I had a local guy (in CT at the time) do my third and it was only $800.

If you know how, it's much cheaper to do it yourself. You can buy parts packages from 3sx and some other sites.

As far as the ticking getting louder, when did you last change the oil? As the need to change it gets closer, the ticking normally gets louder.

Well the guy that I bought it from said that he had it changed right before he sold it to me (this was about 2 months ago) and he had it done at the dealership. Probably less than 1000 miles put on it since then but the oil does seem pretty dirty (not low on oil either, not full though and good oil pressure after the car warms up). He said that the oil is castrol synthetic 5w30. I was planning on using one can of seafoam (just splitting it 1/3 to the crank/gas/hose, would this be okay or should I use 2?) and then changing the oil afterwards. When I first bought the car it did not have any tick but about a week afterward it popped up but it was very quiet and ever since its just gotten louder.

check your oil for metal shavings.

I'd get hopping on that 120k soon before you're left stranded on the side of the road with bent valves.

Idle could be IAC, but since that's been changed, look at your MAS (mass airflow sensor).
