Forum Rules

Welcome to the new 3SI.org Technical Discussion forum. It is the sincere hope of  3SI's management staff that we can use this new forum to help restore some of the insightful technical content that this board once had, and to further advance our platform as a whole.

In order to keep this new forum focused and on-topic, there have to be a few rules and guidelines. They'll be updated and refined as time goes on, but they will always be enforced no matter what their current status. Anyone who is posting in the new forum is assumed to have read these rules, and agrees to be bound by them.

The overall goal of this forum is a simple one. To allow those who are truly interested in the how's and why's of the inner workings of our cars to converse. Everyone with a genuine interest in the technical aspects of these cars is welcome to post, as long as it's within the framework Laid out below. Just because the title is "Technical Discussions" does not mean you need a degree in automotive engineering to participate. It just means that you've got an honest interest in learning and advancing your knowledge, in discussing new and/or poorly understood topics and helping others to learn at the same time.
  1. You NEED a service manual. There's one "must have" for anyone who wants to do more than an oil change on their car,  Chilton's and Haynes are ok, but they pale in comparison to the factory service book. There is absolutely no excuse not to have one if you plan to turn a wrench on your car. Any topic that could be answered by looking in the service manual will be deleted. Any question that could be answered with a yes/no answer or a one-liner will be deleted on sight, with no explanation given. Questions that are that simple have no place in an Advanced forum.
  2. Flaming and abuse of any kind WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. Insults, slander and just general rudeness will be grounds for a temporary ban from the Tech forum, with further infractions leading to a permanent removal from the Tech forum and a temporary "vacation" from 3SI in general. This is not to say that arguments or disagreements are not permitted! In fact, I encourage it. But it must be kept civil and if you're going to argue with someone, be prepared to back it up with some research. This increases not only your own credibility, but that of the forum in general.
  3. Show a little initiative before starting a new topic. By that, I mean searching for previous discussions on your topic. If you'd like to bring old topics back to life to try to add something new to them, please do! If you find an old jewel in one of the other forums, and would like it moved to the Tech forum, just ask Nobody is going to flame you for resurrecting an old topic (see rule 2) but do be prepared to give a reason for doing so. It helps avoid clutter. If I can find a previous question and suitable answer with a search in 5 minutes, I expect anyone else can do it in at least 15 or less. Nobody will take your concerns seriously unless you put forth some effort and concern of your own.
  4. If you don't KNOW the answer to a question. I'm sure everyone appreciates it when someone tries to be helpful, but it does more damage than good when someone posts a reply that was poorly researched or worse, an uninformed guess. If you don't KNOW the answer to a question, please don't post speculation as a means of being "helpful. If you want to be helpful, try to search out the answers on your own. Not just on 3SI, but the internet as a whole. The information IS out there. Finding new sources of information and helping others to do so is far more helpful than some half-baked guess! There is also no shame in admitting you don't know, and would like something explained in a little more detail.
  5. This is not the "Dream Forum". Just because this is the "Advanced" forum doesn't mean this is the Dream Forum. The first person who asks about installing a skyline transmission in this car is going on a speedy vacation Try to be at realistic with your topics.
  6. Post about 3S material. This forum was created for discussion about all makes and models of 3S cars. Non-turbo, AWD, conversions, nitrous, whatever. Everyone is welcome! However, if you're going to bring a non-3S car into the discussion, be prepared to show a clear relevance to a 3S topic. We've all heard over and over about how Bob's Supra can run 45 psi. Go discuss Supras in the Lounge or something. But if you've got some nugget of Supra knowledge that could possibly be applied to our cars. post it up! If you've found some theory or idea on a Camaro board that might be altered to work with our cars, please share it The worst thing that can happen is we decide it won't work.
  7. There will be no post bumping, or "paging" other members. If you need to get in touch with another board member directly, that's what we have email and private messaging for.
  8. PLEASE pass along any complaints and concerns to any of the moderators. We will try my best to respond to private messages and emails promptly. The only way I can run this forum effectively is with the help and feedback of everyone using it.
  9.  Moderators reserve the right to make decisions on forum content based solely on their own judgment. Examples being threads that have drifted off topic, been "hijacked" or are just poorly worded and/or presented.
