I would really like to get one however i fell very intimadated by the why it sounds. You need a wideband and all these sensors and such which i have no idea how to install and so on and so forth. i would like one but not sure if i have the skills to tackle such a project.

That's the start of a 3S AEM FAQ that I worked on a bit in December. I've just about got my car back on the road after a tranny failure, so I will be tuning on the AEM again hopefully within the next month.

I've tuned several 3S cars with the AEM and have had good success with all of them. Moreso on my own, since I've spent more time with it. In the FAQ there's info on how to set up a quick boost compensation map from the basemaps that AEM provides. There are some newer tricks than what's in the FAQ, but my car is essentially tuned with exactly what's in the FAQ and it runs great.

I don't think there's anything that should hold a serious tuner back from getting an AEM at this point. The growing pains seem to be over and the software is very stable now. There is a pretty good group of 3/S people on the AEM Forums that answer questions (myself included).

You don't need anything but the AEM and a laptop, the other goodies are of huge benefit and little cost once you have the AEM though.

Can't believe I kinda skipped over that post by mjannusch. I was thinking of a different page when I saw the link. I'll have to take a look

That's true - you can get it running with just the AEM, but you'll have a much more difficult time getting it dialed in without the speed-density setup and at least one wideband O2 sensor.

The way that the AEM calculates "load" with a frequency-based MAF is somewhat strange (in my opinion) which makes it tougher to get good fuelling and timing maps set up. By going speed-density, you make the fuel setup easier by a factor of 5 easily.

The wideband helps not only in showing you precise A/F ratios, but also by allowing you do to real O2 feedback at all load levels if desired, as well as "autotune" to help you build a proper fuel map in a more automated fashion.

If you are short on funds, you CAN do it without those tools - but in my opinion it is a handicap to not have them.

mjannusch - nice site and write-up.

I have way less in my AEM than I did with all my piggybacks.........and now have infinitely more tuning options.

I also have a GM boost control solenoid if anyone's interested in purchasing it. I'm not using it. Using my GReddy E-01 instead, personal decision.

Coal - boost comp is the way to go.

My car, with 1,000cc injectors and race cams, idles at 950rpms at 14.7:1 AFR all thanks to the AEM ems. ....and Renner and IPSJeff.

coal, you didnt mention what mods you have it makes a huge difference in the map i would send you, injectors and turbos being the most important, also i use a boost comp map for my personal car and usually send people a boost comp map unless the request other wise

its not full boost comp its a "hybrid" boost comp map meaning only load lines above 0psi are boost comp, this makes it more streetable IMO and easier to tune low in the load/rpm ranges ill send you this and a full boost comp one if you want and you can decide, my email is penguLns2001@aol.com if you want to contact me off the forums

Yeah, that'll work fine too. You will get a little more fuel map resolution (ie: smaller steps per "value" on the map) by using boost comp all the way across your MAP sensor's range, but either way has plenty of resolution for fuel tuning. Either way works great though, especially compared to not using Boost Comp at all.

How much GM boost control selenoid going for? What is better to use EBC or GM BC on AEM car? thanks
