Everywhere I have read it's closer to 50 not 80

My bad... I don't spend much time tuning anymore these days. I'll edit the original post to reflect that.

I appreciate the quick response, it sounds like there are some knowledgeable people in this thread. It seems that the AEM's idle control system is pretty good, at least on this application. I will see what my friend wants to do, but I think we may try using the EMS to control boost. It's cheap (just buy the solenoid) and it will reduce the amount of redundant wiring, sensors, and plumbing, plus the duty cycle map is more precise than even an AVC-R or E-01. The car will likely only see one boost setting anyway (and I think the EMS has input for a low/high boost switch, but that would take up another 12v channel). The biggest concern is stable boost under a range of ambient temperatures with maximum area under the boost curve.

The 0-5v inputs are under discussion, but the backpressure readings would be useful because we are indeed going to experiment with some different types of exhaust configurations given the target power level. It would be interesting for example to log backpressure while adjusting the crack pressure of the wastegates and other boost control minutiae. If there aren't enough inputs, they would probably be the first to go though. I think dual EGT is more important.

I have a couple of questions I'm hoping you guys can help me out with:

1. I'm going to be switching over to an AEM system in the coming months and I've been looking at picking up some of their AEM Serial Data Stream gauges. Is anybody using these and are they a worthwhile? I've been thinking about getting three of them to replace the stockers. I'd like to have it display AFR, boost and knock in the stock locations and then have warnings for water temp/oil pressure/knock which would activate the LEDs of the gauges.

2. How many inputs does the AEM EMS unit have? Reason I'm asking is because it'd be nice to have the unit log AFRs, water temp, oil pressure in addition to the usual things like boost and knock.

One more question:

1. How powerful of a laptop is needed to run the tuning software vs. what do you guys recommend? Currently looking at an old win95 laptop with an original pentium processor which apparently has a ridiculously small amoutn of ram (48mb). Will this run the AEM software or will this laptop just be too puny?

I use two serial gauges w/ my system and like them a lot.

They come preconfigured for basics (water temp, rpm, speed, O2 1 and O2 2, etc.). You have to individually set up a few others you listed (knock) and oil pressure you'll need to add a sending unit.

I prefer the GaugeTech display instead of the AEM serial gauges mostly because I can run the GaugeTech and have the laptop connected at the same time. With the serial gauges it is one or the other. If you don't tweak with your AEM maps much, or don't need logs other than what fits in the onboard flash logger, then the serial gauges are probably a good choice.
