uh, u do need the 2G shifter plate to go with the shifter. I found this out when the 2G shifters I had would not clear my 91 plate on the floor.. Or you could cut your 1st gen plate to get it to fit

I tried to put a 3nd gen shifter in my 92. It hits the late. We compared the shifters and the 2g has more metal below the lower pin. I think a few minutes with and angle grinder will correct the issue.

I bolted in a '98 shifter and plate assembly into my '92 VR-4 and had no issues at all. I didn't even have to adjust the cables.
