pretty cool. I dropped 10mm bolt once....found it 8 years later between turbo and heat shield when I remove the engine. Initially I spent 5 hours looking for it and gave up.
Well, we may not be out of the woods just yet. I went out this morning and lined up the crank gear with the timing mark on the oil pump. The cams on the front head were dead on, but both gears on the rear head were 3 teeth off. Hopefully it didnt toast the valves on the rear head. I am in the process of putting it all back together right now. Have all the new timing components on and i'm getting ready to install the new belt.

If it was running when he shut it off, I wouldn't worry too much. 3 teeth is right at the limit if I recall.
$5 says it runs like a champ when you're done.

And ps my build is almost complete and I could run 10s if I wanted to cause I got it build to the nuts. But I'm going after 600whp not time slips.

She lives to fight another day!! Got it all put together and with a little jump start she fired right up. Drives smooooth as butter! I was surprised i did the work without looking up anything on the net. It has been a little over 6 years since i've done a timing belt job.
Definately don't want to use the old belt. I told Taylor to take it to his autoshop class tomorrow to show his friends what shitty work can lead to. Maybe it will help them become better mechanics if they see the effects of a fouled up job.
When I did the 60K on my current 93, I found: A generic brand waterpump using the fel-pro paper style gasket versus the OEM metal style, a 10mm nut and a bunch of leaves and shit in the galley behind the water pump; I have NO idea how it didn't have that pump shitting the bed all that time he had it driving before I bought it.

Congratulations on the save. I see crap like this way to often. I did a dohc suby last week. Customer drove into another shop for a timing belt (no problems) came out skipping and was told it needed a head gasket. I found 3/4 cams off time. It had a ecu code for cam timing...... speechless. This doesn't mean we are all morons haha.
Never said anyone was a moron, just don't understand how someone could drop a 17mm nut and then not take the time to make sure it didn't fall into a bad spot. That is just sheer laziness on the mechanics part. If i do the work and something goes wrong then i can only blame myself. Also, think of all the money i saved that can now be spent on something good like beer.
