Im not saying that saying that the 300zx is horrible nor am I bashing it. I completely respect the 300zx and if I had some extra cash in my pocket, it would be the next thing on my list. Its the fact that these guys come down bashin the 3000gt, and this is me standing up for the damn car.
Being a former 3000GT VR4 and 300ZX TT owner, I can say, in complete honesty that the 300ZX (stock and lightly modded) is a better car than the VR4. There, I said it, shoot me.
With an ECU upgrade and bolt-ons you can run 11's, plus, they're rediculously reliable- I never had a single problem with mine. Meanwhile, my VR4 barely ran 12's and spun a bearing and the transmission was notchy and liked to grind gears, like every other VR4 I've driven. My VR4 had less than 100,000 miles, and my Z had 123,xxx when I sold it... original motor/trans/turbos.
Only thing the VR4 has on the Z IMO (other than looks, which can be subjective) is that on the VR4 it's MUCH MUCH easier to work on.
-Also other than the superior reliability and horsepower:
- Z's interior is much nicer than the VR4's, leather vs. leather.
- T-Tops rock.
- Handling seemed better.
- Better gas mileage (as dumb as it sounds)
- Cons: 300ZX's are priced about 10,000 bucks vs. VR4's 5-6000 for a great condition 1G or 8-10 for a 2G.
Sounds like you had a real peice of shit VR4...like many of them are..
The Z's do have better stock hardware in respect to making power no doubt. A friend of mine had one pretty well built and i still smacked it silly in my 93 every time we raced.
The interior is terrible dated in the Z, they are ugly, t-tops suck and the handling feel is better in the Z but the grip is far superior in the VR4. If i wanted a Z, id just get a Vette and have a vastly superior car in every aspect.

Sounds like you had a poorly maintained VR4. (When will people learn, ANY car can be a POS if the previous owner didn't take care of it ) I've never had any major problems. 123k, 100's of passes at the track, driven hard daily, and the tranny is smooth as butter. (Also got mid-12's with a couple hundred dollars of mods, though admittedly there's not much left in the stock turbo setup from there)
I'd take the 3S cockpit to the Z's anyday.
I will say, however, if the Z's front didn't look like a Saturn, I probably would have bought one instead of the VR4.
Oh yeah, and sub-5 second 0-60mph rain or shine FTMFW!
