alright the other day i was heading out to ct to get the emissions done and as i was driving on 84 the trans just started to slip badly. id give it a little gas and the rpms would just shoot up without the tranny engaging. i pulled off the next exit and check the fluid. fine. after the car sitting for half an hour i started it back up and it would catch and i could move again. 2 minutes later trying to drive up the on ramp it started slipping again. i tried running it in L, 2, D w/o o/d and o/d. same thing. it seemed like once the car was running it would slip. and then after it cooled down a little the trans would work for a little while, i drove it onto the flatbed and into the parking space where its being kept after all. any ideas?

Could be a clogged trans filter. Worth doing the service first. Ive seen this before on newer carvans.. When cold it drives fine, After 20 minutes of driving the trans starts skipping

im REALLY hoping i dont have to go through a rebuild. to be honest i doubt the trans has been serviced since it came from the factory. whoever had it before me really did not care to even bother with maintenance. ill deal with the trans filter and do a fluid change and see what happens.

if it slipped you burnt clutches and bands. if it was 100% not engaging you might be ok with a service.

The #1 destroyer of automatic transmissions is failing to change the fluid and filter at the recommended service interval.

GTONW is good to go

drain the oil in a clean tub and check for sludge, if you got sludge you got no clutch plates left. IPT do everything for these and at a very reasonable price too. possibly the best place for the pan filter and pencil filter along with fluid and gaskets good luck

alright well the transmission pan is off and the fluid was jet black. i was told that the gaskets were discontinued though. i also looked on 3sx and couldnt find a replacement. there were also 3 flat magnets in the pan. anyone have an explanation for this?

The gasket may be just an RTV suitable for trans fluid. Availabe at any auto parts store.
The magnets are there on purpose. They collect, or try to collect, the metallic debri that otherwise would be floating around and eventually wearing the seals. Simply clean the magnets of the fuzzy stuff and reinstall. Use a can of brake parts cleaner to remove residue of trans and pan especially since you are most likely gonna use an RTV....sometimes the rtv won't stick and may leak if the surfaces are not really really really clean...It sucks to have to take the pan down again. If you do use the RTV, I like to put a generous amount all the way around. Then with a glove on take your finger and evenly smear RTV on the pan gasket surface. Then take a pencil or the cap that the RTV came with and poke the holes clear because you dont want RTV inside the threaded cavities.....if the hole isn't open on the other side, the pressure caused by the bolt going in can crack the case. |
