Default So it was a GOOD THING that I broke that piston.

Some of you have followed my 60K service where I happened to trash a perfectly good motor.

Cliff notes..I was doing a 60K with oil pump and decided to look at the rod bearings. Pulled a piston down after unbolting the rod and the piston bumped the crank counterweight and broke off the little tab that sticks out on the piston. The bearings all looked good and I had even and great compression across the board at 118K.Basically mad as hell because I trashed a perfectly running motor.

Forward to Friday. I picked up the rods, pistons and crank to plastigauge the rods as the machine shop said my crank was on the outter limit of tolerance.I wanted to check them myself.I took the pistons in the block so I hadn't looked at them up close. After inspection I find that the #6 piston had a broken ring land. The car had run fine and had great compression. So now I don't feel so bad about breaking that little piece off.It was a blessing in disguise.Replacing them with Ross forged 9:1. A little ray of light in my otherwise crappy month(3s) wise.

Good to hear things are turning around for you Mike. I am sure you are going to love those 9:1 pistons.

Your Quaife diff is boxed in my living room and one tranny is boxed up. I need to find another 2 boxes.Who knew how hard it would be to ship two trannies?Anyway, I have tomorrow afternoon off and it's off to UPS.Looking at the Quaife and how nice it is makes me want to keep it.Too bad it will only work as a door stop with the tranny I have now.

118 is terrible compression it should be around 155 - 160, why didnt you go with 8:1 or 8.5:1 instead of 9

Reading comprehension > you

He said he had great compression at 118k miles......

Also 9:1 allows for better off boost response and allows for more "error" over the 10:1 hes been running for years.
