In WA you have 15 days to register the car. There are extra fees if you wait too long as well. I didn't have all the paperwork 100% and they waived them because it was only a couple days past. But yeah, its basically tax fraud if you don't register the car.

You dont have to register the car to pay taxes. Just get the title in your name.

ohio it wont work. they will make you go back and get a new title from the original owner to him.

I had a nightmare with my car. Fortunately the previous owner was a nice person and actually listened to my pleas

You would have to get a bill of sale from original owner. He should want to handle that for you to finally get it out of his name. This happens all the time, and your part of it is legal. You pay sales tax. I have a title service and can assure you it can be done this way. Dealers are the only ones that can reassign a title from first owner to another dealer and so on. The paper trail of bill of sales from individual to individual would complicate the matter and you would end up causing yourslef grief. If the original owner did not protect himself by omitting the name of his buyer on the title, then what you have is an open title. With the bill of sale from original owner you can tranfer it.

The dealership guy just put my name on it as the buyer, and it looked like he never owned it.

Which is great for him, because he didn't have to pay taxes on it, no doubt. I was young and dumb when I bought my first 3/S, though, so I'd never do that again now... it's Shady, to be honest.

Ask the seller for the previous buyer's info and give him a call. Talk to him. If the seller is on the level, he'll happily provide you with that info, and he'll HAVE it all handy and accessible. Only someone shady or trying to rip you off would withhold that info or say they don't have it.

For all you know, he marked up the car $5,000 and is just trying to make a quick profit. Then again, maybe he bought a car with issues that the other seller disclosed, and he isn't. A ten minute phone call could take care of a lot of worry.
Dealers don't have to pay taxes anyways. They pay like $50 to register the car and then they can sell it legit.
