Default replaced rack, cant get rid of air

Replaced rack, filled resevoir to capacity, slowly turned the wheel left to right over and over again with the resevoir cap off and noticed no bubbles, turned the wheel very fast and had an explostion of steering fluid, refilled resevoir, turned wheel at medium speed, replaced fluid as necessary, ran starter while turning wheel and noticed no bubbles, started engine with res cap on and pump nearly ran dry, refilled resevoir, ran engine while turning wheel back and forth slowly, decided job was done then began by 120k service.

putting car back together along with 13ts, putting tierod ends on, turned wheel very fast back and forth with engine off to test fmic clearence, steering fluid came out of the resevoir WITH THE CAP ON.

i have yet to start the car with the 13t's as i am awaiting other parts, but i am not sure what to do about the rack....

(sorry forthe odd phrasing, I figured it would be easy to follow my steps this way.)

Well I'm not saying it will definately fix anything, but if you decide on replacing your pump, I have one of the ribbed-belt style ones sitting in a box next to me (used of course)

To properly bleed a power steering system you need to raise the front end on jack stands, start the car and work the steering wheel back and forth, lock to lock. You will never get all the air out quickly as PS fluid loves to collect air. The remaining air will come out over time. Just work the wheel back and forth at a slow to medium speed to avoid fluid jumping out of the resovoir.

Hope that helps.

yeah, run the car and turn left-right until the whining stops. Then make sure you are full. Chances are you will over-fill and it will make its way out the cap while you are driving.

The instructions I got with my reman rack mentions between 20-40 times turning of the wheel. Don't know how much you did.

Mine is still on the lift. So I haven't bled it yet. Rear turbo leaking oil. Trying to decide between rebuilding or going for 19Ts.

The thing is though, the fluid is being pumped out of the cap on the reservoir. I had this problem a couple months ago but I ended up having to replace both my rack and PS pump, so unfortunately I'm not sure which caused it. It does sound like some sort of pressure relief valve in the pump is seized though? Pure speculation, but why else would fluid come out of the cap like that?

this is common if you turn the wheel fast with the engine off. Pump is not sucking from reservoir, so it is easy for the steering wheel pressure to pump fluid backwards back into the reservoir.
