Default Replace front main seal without removing oil pump?

Can you replace the front main seal (maybe also called crankshaft seal?) without removing the oil pump? If you have the crank pulley and timing belt off already, that should be pretty easy right?

Anyone had success with oil seals from NAPA or Autozone?

i dont see why just make sure you use some kind of seal installer or make one of some sort. I make my transfer case seal tool out of pvc pipe.

Note the exact depth the seal is seated at.

Go to a "seal" company and get a couple. These seals are so tight you can often destroy a couple trying to get them in. Make sure you get the exact size seal.

Use a screw (big sharp thread. Pop a small hole in with a small nail, then screw it in). Use vise grips to finish getting the seal out.

I will have to check dealer prices. I'm in the hole so much with this car already with all these little things really adding up.

Yeah, but those costs double and or triple when you use equipment that leaks/fails.

I'm SOHC and yes I was able to get the crankshaft seal off without removing the oil pump.

Its doubtful that you are SOHC also, but what I had done was with the tensioner spring (sohc only) i shaved it off until it was like a pick. I stuck it in at such an angle to puncture and get it good enough to pull out. I didn't get it on the first try, or the tenth. but it eventually came free. Put the other one on, and with an appropriate size socket, you can hammer it on (rubber mallet maybe)

I got the 'front main seal' at Advanced Autoparts (for once they got something right for me ) And it was in stock, somehow.

Good luck,
Michael

Well, after my rebuild, needless to say I was pretty pissed to see my car pissing oil all over after having the car run for 5 minutes. I thought it was the oil pump itself or the oil pan. Either way I thought I was looking at another 6-7 man hours of work just to get the thing running right so I wasn't too happy. Me and my buddy determined it was actually the front main seal based on how it was leaking and took care of it the next day. took about two hours cause I had to take timing belt and what not back off. again this is sohc = cake... but this was back in August when it was done and believe me its the least of my worries now... no problems at all with leaks.

The OEM seal is $ 8.48

http://www.horsepowerfreaks.com/oem/...tion=000393221

they will ship tomorrow.

All you need is a flat head screwdriver and a hammer and some oil. Lube the seal press it in gently.
You do not need to remove the oil pump. But if I remember correctly you do have to remove the timing belt from the bottom bracket. So you might as well change that.

My only question though, is why is the seal leaking?
Has it been punctured?
