Its getting close to enough time to where I'm going to summarize this thread and make a call on what to do with all the information gathered herein. Until that point anybody else that wants to contribute to this thread in either a positive, neutral, or negative way can/should do so.
Shockeere - As far as what to do to contribute you just did. Anyone with specifics on what happened to them in traffic or just to their car due to an ECU failure of any sort should disclose all the details. I'm especially interested in the fires caused by bad ECU's as well as ECU failures that led to accidents in traffic.

Looks like my ecu died on me. Not totally sure if it was the ecu or something else, I'll find out sometime this week when the ecu gets back from avpro. It died on me in traffic but luckily I was able to pull over and roll to a stop in a parking lot. But was only a couple minuets from getting on I-95 where, due to construction, there is no shoulder. So that would have been serious bad news.

my ecu is following the trend as of last night. started running on only 5 cylinders. tach needle was all over the place with no change in actual engine rpms. (datalogger showed no change yet guage went crazy)
i pulled the ecu today and found all 3 caps to be leaking badly. electrolytic fluid all over the place

I'm sorry.. I can just not get on board with this idea at all....
I make my living repairing cars that wear out and break. Just because after ten years of operation a particular model starts to show a pattern of having a particular weak point, does not in any way mean that the vehicle did not perform to it's design standards.. Just look around these forums.. Are ECUs the most common failure on these cars? Are we going to recall every part that wears out? fuel pumps, timing belts, PTUs? Hell.. if you want to make my day, get them to recall the dash vents.. I don't think anyone understands the scope of what is being discussed here.. This design of capacitor is used in every ECU Mitsubishi made for years.. Do you really think that they'll recall every ECU in every 3S, DSM, Galant, Mirage, Hyundai, and Mazda, built for a period of a dozen years or so..? The only thing that distinguishes our cars and some DSMs, from the vast hoards of other vehicles with the same issues, is the fact that they're a desirable enough vehicle that they don't end up in the crusher before the caps start leaking.. Maybe we could just legislate a lifetime warranty for all cars.. Then I can just lock the doors on my shop and go to work for the dealer... I'm going to go whip my horse now.. It died in 1988, but I'm sure if I keep trying, I'll get to ride it one of these days...

Blown caps are no more of a safety concern than anything else on the car that can make it stop moving.... A clutch failure, broken axle or u-joint, bad PTU, crank sensor failure, timing belt.. Should I go on? Cars wear out.. Cars break.. If they didn't, I'd be out of a career... What else would you like to recall that will pull another potential repair out of my shop, and put it in the dealership, at the expense of the next person who goes to buy a new car..? |

Alright, I see your point. Don't get me wrong, you need business too, I understand.
However, A clutch or something is a wear item. If made right, the ecu should not fail. Its solid state, as long as it isn't exposed to a climate conducive to corrosion, it shouldn't stop working because of inferior capacitors. There are also unconfirmed cases where 3s's have randomly started on fire which is thought (though unconfirmed) to be caused by the ecu. |
