my car has spent its entire life in the south. For that matter the humidity is 90% or more all the time and around this time of the year you will see high 90's low 100's with that humidity.

add me. both my 93base and 92 TT ECU caps failed. had a replacement in the base, and caps replaced by avepro on my TT. since then no problems on either, but now my idle is messing around on me.(might be vacuum leak or something)
but they've both gone on me..

I didn't read anything other than the original post, so I don't know what anyone else said...
The ECU caps leaking is a problem with any Mitsu manufactured ECU... DSM, 3s, Mazda, or any other manufacturer that buys Mitsubishi electronics. It is usually climate and age that factor in. The average failure is over ten years old, and easily repaired.. I don't see the basis for a recall. No part is designed or expected to last forever.. Just because a part is proven to be less reliable in the field than we would like, does not mean the manufacturer is liable for the repairs.. Most of these failures have been out of warranty for six to seven years... If cars never broke, or all failures were under warranty, I'd be out of a job... What are we going to recall next, Ford Taurus heater cores..? |

this won't happen, too old of a car.
It seemed to start through the early 90's that Mitsubishi started putting sub-par capacitors in everything, not just there cars, but TV, VCR, and everything else. I have no idea how many TV's that I have had to repair due to leaky capacitors. I could figure probably 300ish TV's at a minimum. They are still aren't using the best capacitors in there DLP TV's. I've had lots of bad buldging caps for the lamp ballast and DM PWB's. This is on a small scale atleast these days. Only TV manufacturers using worse caps are AKAI, ILO, VIZIO, and a couple others. I've seen blown up capacitors on the power supply board withing 3 months of purchase!!! So don't think as 3S owners your the only ones getting screwed due to bad caps.

Me for a 92' VR-4 (Happened on a crank up, and then Idle would not hold anymore)
Rebuilt, no problems yet. AEM in 2 months, will sell stock that I have then. I have a 2001 Chevy Cavalier that had a recall on it for a starter wiring harness that needed a relay (Cavaliers are actually made by Toyota). The recall was done due to less than 10 of the total amount manufactured had caught on fire under the hood. The Cavalier is also know for ECMs loosing all memory of the car and stoping the injectors aroud every 3-5 years. The dealership that re-programed he ECM said that chevy was under way with a possible recall by 2010 for the factory ECM (I was shown the papers to provide it... from Toyota too, haha). My car was the third in a week at the time to have the ECM re-programed. Anyways, this goes to show that if Toyota and GM can do a recall for less than 10 cars catching on fire due to missing a relay in the starting circut, then Mitsubishi should also do it for fires under the dash. That is my opinion, and props to anyone that is willing to do the work on getting this in order before submitting the complaint to Mitsubishi. |

so i have no desire to read this entire thread, i imagine other people have pointed this out before.
this problem is not isolated to cars, and its not just isolated to mitsubishi electronics (although i am sure they all exhibit the same problem, and bad atmospheric conditions probably cause the problem to happen faster). This is a common problem in many computer motherboards from the mid 90's, and i routinily see the problem at work on computer motherboards as young as 3 years old from all manufacturers (including intel). the computer technician legend is that in a case of industrial espionage a capacitor manfucaturer stole the chemicle formula for the electrolitic material in the caps from another manufacturer, not knowing the formula was faulty, as a result billions of capcitors were produced with a high suceptability to poping. i really dont know if thats true or not.
