I completely agree with this. I'm a 19 year old freshman who owns an SL at the moment. It does the job, gets the ladies, without the pricetag of a 500hp VR-4.

Now this doesn't mean that that won't change as soon as I'm out of college. But i never planned on having more than 450hp max. I'm not a big fan of the dragstrip, I'm more of a fan of driving quickly down the backroads in my rural-esque town. So anything on top of 400/450 hp would just be ludicrous for me.

Well put Russian. However keeping it cheap might be a problem as my list of body/paint improvements will be WAAAAAY more than they should be...

Show/DD cars ftw

Wow, I just got through reading all 18 pages of this thread, and I have to say I'm impressed. I laughed out loud at times, and I also seriously underestimated the maturity of the majority of the mod-crazy tuners out there. I've daily-driven a bone-stock '97 3000 SOHC for two and a half years and I just recently got the mod fever.

Russian, let me thank you for this post and tell you that it absolutely does NOT fall on deaf ears for the younger owners out there. At 21, I consider myself one of them. After reading this, I just rewound months of mod thoughts and changed them all. I'm ashamed to say that I can remember a day when I thought spending thousands on suspension/braking/handling was ludicrous when that money could be used to throw in a pair of ball-bearing Garretts and pave the way to 4- or 500 HP.

That being said, I still plan to single-turbo my ride, but now I know how I want to go about it. Carefully.

This is honestly the best reading I've done on this forum.

I totally agree with what you said. There is a breaking point, and there is a limit. You can be very happy with very little (or what some consider to be very little) And if other people dont like it, tell them to read something else!

Agreed on STICKY, If my car were 600hp I would be driving alone. 500hp is super fast and the limit for my stomach and for my kids to ride with me. I too was guilty of the need for speed. Never again, it's really expensive and a waste of money, I'm glad I'm done.

Intresting reading this. Reminds me of my friend's cobra. Damn Danny's cobra makes more than 500 hp to the wheels, he also has a 3000gt vr4 that he is currently working on. He took me for a ride once in his mustang cobra..... IT FELT WORSE THAN A ROLLERCOSTER!! But I liked the feeling. I don't plan on making big horsepower I just want the twinturbo conversion for my sl. On stock turbo's with good handling performance. I just love 3s and I won't get off the platform. I enjoy driving it everyday!

Fantastic read! I'm glad I recognized early on that 500HP was more than enough for the street.

My younger brother does the big stuff, but they are mostly Mopars for the strip. I've ridden in his 68' Firebird with 700HP, and at 40mph that thing scared the sht outa me! When it comes down to it, I love my 3kgt because it's comfortable, looks amazing, and is a fast daily/weekend driver.

I started off with a stock 91 Talon TSI AWD, sold that and got the 94 VR4, and I'll tell you the stock 320 at the crank is just fine for now. Even before purchasing the car I intended to push no more than 500 at the crank.

I'm glad to know a lot of fellow 3000 owners share the same mindset

I have driven my vr4 about 5K miles in the 2 years I have owned it. But I have a DD (stock z32 TT) It was so hard not to modd. I have seen my friends with modded cars with High HP goals, and the stress that comes with the nessecity of keeping it going so that they can make it to school or work and it is not fun. 500WHP is deffinitly a resonable goal for a DD done right. For any one planning on having a nice powerfull dd that doesnt end up costing an arm and a leg i would deffinitly suggest that they stick wit ha TD04 because of howmuch less work and costs are involved.

so true every time I have had my car on the road I try and drive it exclusively. iIt actually wasn't too bad last time until the clutch sprung a spring (2nd time I had done that). once I get it up and going again I will probably attempt to DD it as much as possible granted it is no longer an evo car with a built 3.0
