Default Oil change disaster....lol

so im out changing the oil on all the cars today, i was even nice enough to do my gf/s talon...everything was going fine up until i had her warm the car up so i could check the dipstick and find out how much of the fifth qt i had to add...upon starting there were huge slurping sounds or air trying to come up through the oil fill cap...i shrugged it off at first, but then checked the dipstick quick... after finding it dry i told her to shut the car off as i continued to puzzle over this abnormality...anyways, just for shits n giggles (as i knew i had put the screw back in and the filter on tight i realized the gravel underneath the car was covered in new quaker state oil...I sighed, not knowing exactly what happened..i figured maybe i put the wrong filter on as i had to buy 5 one for each car...told the gf to put the car in neutral so we could push it back to a dry spot so i could go under, and the genius fires the engine up to do it.... i scream at her to turn the engine off (luckily nothing happened) and showed her how you put the car in neutral without turning the damn thing on...we get it into position and i get under the car, take the filter off (where it was spewing from, and i mean spewing...oil was everywhere) and match it up to the old filter...size was fine, but upon closer inspection i realized the o-ring gasked was nowhere to be found in the old filter...apparently it had been so long since she changed the oil, the old gasket didnt want to leave, and there really wasnt anyway 2 gaskets were going to hold the oil in the tank...sigh...now im left with a big mess in the driveway and am down 5 qts of oil...i guess it coulda been worse with a shot engine... just thought id share..

Common mistake- happens alot with Fram filters where the gasket stays behind unknowingly. Glad you caught it early.

I've had that happen to me twice on my Explorer....the first time was when my sister had it....and so eventually, not right away, the oil drained out. She didn't know any better and fried the motor. I caught it the last time though thank god! (both were Fram filters FYI)

This happened to me once changing the oil on my friend's car. I get it all done, we put oil in, and I tell him to fire it up. I peek under the car to look for leaks and it was just spraying out everywhere. Of course the kid decides to rev the engine up to like 5,000rpm immediately after he gets it started and the large oil spray turns into a high pressure oil spray that shot all the way across the shop...covering me in oil along the way. The whole time I'm yelling at him to shut off the car, but of course he can't hear me because he's got the engine revved up, so not until I stand up and he sees me covered from head to foot in oil does he turn off the car.

Don't you love working with friends who don't know anything about cars?

Don't feel too bad. My dad's friend did the same thing with his motorcycle and fortunately for him, I noticed it before any major damage was done. Let's just say we were able to tell exactly where he turned on the roadways, starting from his driveway to ours.

So, far from the disaster I was anticipating. Could have been so much worse.
