When you get a BB setup, if you trash one of the wheels you have to replace the entire turbo sans the cover and turbine housing. The CHRA and wheels are sold as a complete unit, costing almost as much as an entire new setup. I didn't want to take that chance...and this way I will be testing a setup more affordable to the average consumer like myself and many here.

That said, maybe I am missing something and I am sure someone will chime in and tell me that I am way off.
Of course I am not using the turbine housing the DR1000 uses which I think is the PTE T3 5 bolt in various A/Rs, I am using the Mitsu bolt up PTE housing so I can bolt them to the 3SX TD05 kit. But the wheels are the same nonetheless.
The turbos I have are PTE 5027's.
The 50 trims have been shown in DSMs to make more power on pump at the same psi than EVOIIIs and over all have a higher HP capability. And only minimal increase in Spoolup. They {dsm} normally use the 5031. I went to a 5027 {smaller turbine wheel} to aid in spoolup. According to PTE there is only a 10HP per turbo power capability loss.
I wonder why the compressor cover is a little different. At least the one on DR's website.

I don't think it is a big surprise that DR turbos use off the shelf parts or a combination of off the shelf parts. It is not like they would be able to create their own wheels from scratch and perform better than mitsu/garrett/etc. Plus the cost and size of the runs would have to be huge even if they could find someone to make it.

From the measurements and design of the covers inside and out, they are all but identical. Including A/R. For practical/mechanical purposes I will call them identical. There are slight "cosmetic" differences. But that's it.

And Yes, no one is making "special" parts. They are all off the shelf in production parts that you can match up/combine to make your XXXXX turbo and call it what you want. But at the end of the day, it's a turbo made from off the shelf parts.

It's getting that combo to work in your application that is the trick.

Makes sense. Its one thing when you've got a large personal/shop budget to build cars. Its entirely different when you're using your own limited funds (especially when its a daily driven street car). All of a sudden, parts selection is about more than performance.

you know...it makes sense. dr1300's that matt uses are on his 3.54L engine; so i'd assume that a smaller turbo would mate up better to a 3.0/3.1L engine.

it sounds like you've probably picked the perfect size for this displacement. did you have to do any turbo "clocking" or whatnot?

Unless the turbo was specifically built for a 3S, I'm guessin at least one of the turbos required clocking.

good luck with the build man...I'm so eager to see what happens..

If you don't make the power you want, let me know. I'll round some turbos so you can...

Are you using the cast crank or the forged one?

Used forged crank I had in my garage for years, had it mag'd and polished. Not turned, still stock size.
