He's only running 18 psi? What's wrong with that? He's got arguably the best TD04's available (the compressor wheels are pretty much ideal for the 6g72 if I recall), THE best heads, undoubtedly has had the stock exhaust components ported... Pull a couple degrees from stock timing and 18 psi on pump gas shouldn't be an issue for any completely healthy 3S. Some can even get away with it without pulling timing

Every car makes more power in cold weather, but I'm failing to see the issue regarding the boost level.

I wasn't disagreeing I just wanted to see what Ray had to say on the subject.

Would be interesting to know what he ran on his 91 back in the day on pump considering he had stock SMIC's IIRC.

theres alot of different things that come into play car vs car.

first off..having the right combo of parts. this car picked op a TON of power with the DR cams and heads. even anti dyno guys like Trevor saw that at the track with his.

different years with different ecus all have different timing maps regardless of what a logger reads. you would have to do some dyno runs with a timing light see what it really is..then injector size comes into play.

the 97 and up ECUs seem to be great for making power. ive tuned alot of them. the trick is keeping the fuel trims right and your good.

so lets see.. hes got a Pampena short block, DR heads and cams, a GIANT pro M air meter, the best TD04 turbos there are, his own front mount setup that works great... why SHOULDNT it make great power???

its not a 15G car with dsm side mounts and some cam gears with an AFC lol

Every car makes more power in cold weather, but I'm failing to see the issue regarding the boost level.
I asked the question simply because I dont think he has timing control and needs big enough injectors to put up 550awhp. Its tough to get that injector re-curve to get your timing in check at all rpm values. I ran thru this with my MAFT and had almost 19psi on 550s but it would knock down low at strange times, so I ditched it for the AEM. Ray had my car on his dyno in the summer and could only get a safe tune with up to 16psi and I made about 420awhp. This was with the car really rich as well, and the timing was really low. Bob is still using the hot side of a TDO4 with a smaller wheel in there then me. I was always told it was the hot side that was causing the issues, not the cold side. I have been tweaking my AEM alot and its faster then it was on the dyno SOTP and I see no knock at all at and I am just adding some timing here and there. I am a little scared because I dont know enough about the knock setup to trust it so I have been looking at the raw knock and looking for sharp increases but see none. Ray told me I could use a FMIC, but if he saw knocks and drops on the dyno, that could have been my sway bar hitting my stock DS because thats whats been making the car die after a hard launch and then caused the clutch to slip. We had no way of seeing IATs because there was none hooked up and still isn't because I dont know where to put it.

HOLY SHIT RAY!
Remember when you thought I had blown a hose off. Well I just put the pressure tester on and damn do I have some major leakage outta the front turbo where the hose clamps to it! So want ya wanna bet there's still more in her when we thought it maxed out when raising the boost. DAMN!

Umm...time for a re-tune?

That's a maf based setup.

Iat's should be post intercooler, pre throttle body, not mounted to something that can heat soak.
Just route it to your air temp pinout on your AEM, uses the same one as your MAF sensor, an IAT is critical in a speed density setup (you are speed density aren't you?)

Thanks, I am running the stock intercooler pipes, and yes in speed density, so I was going to put it in the one hard pipe in front of the radiator, but that looked like a bad spot, and I dont know if the plastic y-pipe will work. By the way, it holds all the boost the DR650s can put out and doesn't slip or pop off so I kept it.. Again, I was asking about the temps, because I see almost no strange knock activity even when the boost would whip to 1.2 bar on spikes. If I trusted the knock data and my interpretation, I think in this weather I could max the turbos out and just have make a few timing adjustments with pump. Once I am moving, my DSM SMICs dont even get warm like the stockers, but on a dyno, who knows.
